2. Objective:
● To be able to design hot-rolled steel members under different loadings, and their connections
● To understand concepts of stability, plastic behaviour, ductility, fatigue behaviour and fire resistance
of steel structures
● To be able to design steel-concrete composite slabs, beams and columns
● To understand design of cold-formed steel beams and columns, and their connections
3. Course Content
● Unit #1 Stability and buckling: Flexural, torsional, flexural-torsional and local buckling in steel
members, Design of plate girders [3 Lectures]
● Unit #2 Plastic analysis of frames: Concept of plastic hinge, Equilibrium and mechanism-based
methods, Concept of ductility, Earthquake resistant design of steel structures [6 Lectures]
● Unit #3 Fatigue and fire resistance, Design for variable repeated loading, Introduction to fire design
of steel structures [3 Lectures]
● Unit #4 Steel-concrete composite construction: Behaviour and design of steel-concrete composite
slabs, beams and columns [9 Lectures]
● Unit #5 Cold-formed steel construction: Concept of effective width, Design of beams, columns and
beam-columns using cold-formed steel members, and their connections [9 Lectures]
● Unit #6 Design of steel structures: Industrial shed, steel tank, High-rise steel building [10 Lectures]

7. Outcome: Students will be able to understand different buckling modes in steel members and will be
able to design plate girders. They will also be able to design steel-concrete composite slabs, beams and
columns. They will be able to develop basic understanding of design of steel structures for instability,
earthquake, fire and fatigue. The course will also help to grow interest in pursuing research in areas of
steel and steel-concrete composite structures.
