PAGE 5 – INTRODUCTION
Sustainable development is a form of development that satisfies present needs without harming the ability
of future generations to satisfy their own needs.

Rapid population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and excessive consumption of resources have led
to environmental degradation. Problems such as pollution, climate change, deforestation, and depletion of
natural resources are increasing across the world.

Sustainable development aims to balance economic growth, environmental protection, and social welfare. It
promotes responsible use of resources and encourages people to adopt environmentally friendly lifestyles.

The concept has become increasingly important because human survival depends on maintaining a healthy
environment while continuing economic progress.

2
PAGE 6 – MEANING OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The term “Sustainable Development” became widely known after the Brundtland Report (1987).

Definition: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.”

Main Characteristics:

• Responsible use of resources • Environmental protection • Social equality • Long-term planning • Economic
growth

Sustainable development encourages development that benefits people while preserving nature.

PAGE 7 – HISTORY OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The idea of sustainable development emerged due to growing environmental concerns.

Important Milestones:

1972 – Stockholm Conference on Human Environment

1987 – Brundtland Report introduced the modern definition

1992 – Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro

2000 – Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

2015 – Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations

These milestones helped create international awareness regarding sustainable growth and environmental
conservation.

PAGE 8 – NEED FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Earth's resources are limited while human needs continue to grow.

Reasons why sustainable development is necessary:

1. Prevents depletion of natural resources.

2. Reduces environmental pollution.
3. Helps combat climate change.
4. Protects biodiversity.

3
5. Ensures availability of resources for future generations.
6. Promotes balanced economic growth.

Without sustainable development, future generations may face shortages of water, food, energy, and other
essential resources.

PAGE 9 – THREE PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY

1. Economic Sustainability

Economic activities should create jobs and income while minimizing environmental damage.

1. Social Sustainability

Ensures education, healthcare, equality, and justice for all members of society.

1. Environmental Sustainability

Focuses on conserving resources, reducing pollution, and protecting ecosystems.

These three pillars work together to achieve sustainable development.

(Draw a Venn diagram of Economy, Society, and Environment.)

PAGE 10 – SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Some important goals include:

• No Poverty • Zero Hunger • Good Health and Well-being • Quality Education • Gender Equality • Clean
Water and Sanitation • Affordable and Clean Energy • Decent Work and Economic Growth • Climate Action •
Life Below Water • Life on Land

The SDGs aim to create a sustainable future by 2030.

(Paste or draw the SDG wheel.)

PAGE 11 – CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change refers to long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns.

Causes:

4
• Burning fossil fuels • Deforestation • Industrial emissions • Vehicle pollution

Effects:

• Rising temperatures • Melting glaciers • Sea-level rise • Extreme weather events

Solutions:

• Use renewable energy • Plant more trees • Reduce carbon emissions • Promote sustainable transportation

PAGE 12 – ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

Environmental conservation means protecting the natural environment from destruction and pollution.

Objectives:

• Protect forests • Conserve wildlife • Reduce pollution • Preserve biodiversity

Benefits:

• Cleaner air • Better water quality • Healthy ecosystems • Improved quality of life

Conservation is essential for sustainable development.

PAGE 13 – NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION

Natural resources are materials provided by nature that support life.

Renewable Resources: • Water • Forests • Sunlight • Wind

Non-Renewable Resources: • Coal • Petroleum • Natural Gas

Methods of Conservation:

• Recycling • Afforestation • Rainwater harvesting • Energy conservation

Responsible use of resources helps maintain ecological balance.

PAGE 14 – RENEWABLE ENERGY

Renewable energy comes from sources that are naturally replenished.

5
Types:

• Solar Energy • Wind Energy • Hydropower • Biomass Energy

Advantages:

• Environment-friendly • Sustainable • Reduces pollution • Creates employment

India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity.

(Draw solar panels and wind turbines.)

PAGE 15 – SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Sustainable agriculture promotes farming methods that protect the environment.

Practices:

• Organic farming • Crop rotation • Drip irrigation • Natural fertilizers

Benefits:

• Improved soil fertility • Better crop quality • Reduced pollution • Water conservation

Sustainable agriculture helps ensure food security.

PAGE 16 – WATER CONSERVATION

Water is essential for life and must be conserved.

Methods:

• Rainwater harvesting • Drip irrigation • Repairing leaks • Recycling wastewater

Benefits:

• Prevents water scarcity • Supports agriculture • Maintains groundwater levels

Every drop of water is valuable.

(Draw a rainwater harvesting system.)

6
PAGE 17 – WASTE MANAGEMENT
Waste management involves proper collection, treatment, and disposal of waste.

The 3Rs:

Reduce – Use fewer resources.

Reuse – Use products again.

Recycle – Convert waste into useful products.

Benefits:

• Cleaner environment • Reduced pollution • Conservation of resources

Proper waste management is necessary for sustainable development.

PAGE 18 – INDIA’S ROLE IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

India has launched several initiatives to promote sustainability.

Examples:

• National Solar Mission • Swachh Bharat Mission • Jal Jeevan Mission • Namami Gange Programme • Green
India Mission

India is also committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and reducing carbon emissions.

PAGE 19 – GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES

Swachh Bharat Mission: Promotes cleanliness and sanitation.

Jal Jeevan Mission: Provides safe drinking water.

National Solar Mission: Promotes solar energy.

Green India Mission: Increases forest cover.

Namami Gange: Protects and cleans the Ganga River.

These programmes contribute significantly to sustainable development.

7
PAGE 20 – CONCLUSION
Sustainable development is essential for creating a balance between economic growth, social welfare, and
environmental protection.

The future of our planet depends on how responsibly we use natural resources today. Governments,
industries, and citizens must work together to achieve sustainability.

By adopting eco-friendly practices and supporting sustainable policies, we can ensure a greener and
healthier future for generations to come.

“The Earth is not inherited from our ancestors; it is borrowed from our children.”
