1. What Is the Solar System?


The Solar System consists of the Sun and all the objects that travel around
it because of gravity.
These include:
 Eight planets
 Dwarf planets
 Moons
 Asteroids
 Comets
 Meteoroids

2. The Sun
The Sun is a star at the centre of our Solar System.
It provides:
 Light
 Heat
 Energy
The gravity of the Sun keeps the planets moving in their orbits.

3. The Eight Planets


The planets in order from the Sun are:
1. Mercury
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Uranus
8. Neptune

4. Inner and Outer Planets
Inner Planets
The four planets closest to the Sun are:
 Mercury
 Venus
 Earth
 Mars
They are mostly rocky.

Outer Planets
The planets farther from the Sun are:
 Jupiter
 Saturn
 Uranus
 Neptune
They are much larger than the inner planets.

5. Rotation and Revolution


Rotation
A planet spinning on its axis is called rotation.
Earth takes about 24 hours to complete one rotation. This causes day and
night.

Revolution
A planet travelling around the Sun is called revolution.
Earth takes about 365¼ days to complete one orbit around the Sun.

6. Moons
A moon is a natural object that travels around a planet.
Earth has one natural moon called the Moon.
Some planets have many moons.
7. Asteroids and Comets
Asteroids
Asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the Sun. Many are found in the
asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Comets
Comets are made mainly of ice, dust and rock. When they travel close to the
Sun, they may develop a glowing tail.
