Newton’s laws and work-energy theorem.
Questions marked with ⋆ are intended to require a little additional thought.
1. Consider two positive charges: charge 1 is moving along the positive x-direction, and charge
2 is moving along the positive y-direction. At a given instant let charge 1 be at (a, 0, 0)
and charge 2 be at (0, b, 0), with a, b > 0. Determine the directions of the magnetic forces
exerted by the charges on one another and show that the forces do not obey Newton’s third
law in the simple mechanical sense. Can you identify a possible reason for this behavior?
2. Rockets are propelled by ejecting spent fuel at exhaust speed vex relative to the rocket. If m
is the mass of the rocket at a given instant, use conservation of momentum to show that
v = v0 + vex ln(m0 /m),
where v0 and m0 are the initial velocity and initial mass of the rocket.
3.⋆ A particle of mass m is initially at rest at the origin. It is acted upon by the force
F (t) = F0 e−t/τ (cos Ωt x̂ + sin Ωt ŷ) , t ≥ 0.
Find the final velocity of the particle after the force has effectively died away. Also find the
total impulse delivered by the force.
4.⋆ A body of mass 3m is initially at rest on a smooth horizontal surface. It explodes into three
equal fragments. Immediately after the explosion, two fragments move with speed u and
make an angle 2θ with each other. Find the velocity of the third fragment and the kinetic
energy released in the explosion.
5.⋆ A cart of initial mass M0 moves horizontally without friction with initial speed u0 . Rain falls
vertically into the cart at a constant mass rate λ. Find the speed of the cart as a function of
time. What happens to the kinetic energy?
