Student Questionnaire / Assignment 1 (Part A)
This is a chance for you to not only get to know the learners but also gather information for assignment
2. For assignment 2 you will have to talk about your students as a group of learners. Therefore when
you interview the students make notes of their answers and share your information with the other
trainees in your group. Then refer to the information when you complete assignment 1.
1. Personal info – name, age, their first language (the one they have been exposed to from birth);
nationality, where relevant (e.g. Kazakhstani learners are bilingual, and there could be mixed
influence of both Kazakh and Russian languages on their L1)
2. Job – previous, current, what sort of job they hope to get
3. Interests
4. Reasons for learning English
5. Previous English language learning experience (and other languages, if appropriate)? What did they
think of this? Did they like it?
6. Current exposure to English (e.g. English-speaking friends, travel, films) and what they do outside of
class to improve their English
7. Areas they feel they need to practise (e.g. listening, speaking, writing, reading, grammar, vocabulary,
pronunciation) – why?
8. Favourite topics in the lessons (e.g. films, sports)
9. What they like and don’t like doing in class (e.g. speaking in groups, with a partner, grammar
exercises, reading, listening, writing, games, role plays, moving about the room, working with words)
10. What do you think is the best way to learn English?
11. What advice can you give your new teachers?
