Tutorial-5: Frequency Analysis of Dynamic Systems

Exercise 1 : Polar plot representation

Sketch the polar plots of the following open-loop transfer functions:
50 1+2𝑠
𝐺(𝑠)𝐻(𝑠) = (𝑠+1)(𝑠+2)(𝑠+5) and 𝐺(𝑠)𝐻(𝑠) = (1+𝑠)(1−2𝑠)
Exercise 2 : Polar plot and stability margins
Sketch the polar plot of the following open-loop transfer function:
1 − 2𝑠
𝐺(𝑠)𝐻(𝑠) =
𝑠(1 + 2𝑠)
Determine: Phase crossover frequency 𝜔𝑝𝑐 ; Gain Margin (GM); Gain crossover frequency 𝜔𝑔𝑐 ; and Phase
Margin (PM).
Exercise 3: Bode plot and stability analysis
Draw the Bode magnitude and phase plots of the following open-loop transfer function:
5
𝐺(𝑠) =
s(1 + 2𝑠)(1 + 4s)
Determine: Phase crossover frequency 𝜔𝑝𝑐 ; Gain Margin (GM); Gain crossover frequency 𝜔𝑔𝑐 ; and Phase
Margin (PM)
Comment on the stability of the closed-loop system.
Exercise 4: Bode Plot with zero
Draw the Bode plots of the following open-loop transfer function:

20(𝑠 + 4)
𝐺(𝑠) =
s(𝑠 + 2)(𝑠 + 10)
Determine: Phase crossover frequency 𝜔𝑝𝑐 ; Gain Margin (GM); Gain crossover frequency 𝜔𝑔𝑐 ; and Phase
Margin (PM)
Comment on the stability of the system.
Exercise 5 : Bode plot with double integrator
Draw the Bode plots of the following open-loop transfer function:
40(s + 1)
G(s) = 2
s (s + 4)(s + 10)
Determine: Phase crossover frequency ωpc ; Gain margin (G.M.) ; Gain crossover frequency ωgc and Phase
margin (P.M.)
Provide a stability assessment of the system.

Exercise 6 : System identification from Bode plot

Determine the transfer function of a system whose asymptotic Bode
magnitude plot is provided below, given that the phase crossover
frequency is:
𝜔𝑝𝑐 = 6 rad/s
