The table below shows the proportion of income spent on 4 common items in the
UK in 1988

The table illustrates the percentage of income that adults and children expenditure on
four common items, namely food, electronic equipment, music and videos, in 1988.
Overall, adults
spent the largest
proportion of their
income on food,
whereas children
allocated the
highest percentage
of their expenditure
to music. Women
devoted a
significantly higher
share of their
income to food than
men, while boys
spent more on electronic equipment and videos than girls.

Looking first at adults, food accounted for 25% of their expenditure, making it the
most significant category. Spending money on electronic equipment and music was
identical at 5%, while only 1% of income spent on videos. Regarding to gender
differences, women spent a much higher proportion on food than men, at 39% and
14%, respectively. In contrast, men allocated 10% of their income on electronic
equipment, compared with only 1% for women.

Turning to children, music represented the largest share of spending, ar 39%.


Expenditure on electronic equipment was also high, accounting 23%, whereas food
and videos made up 10% and 12%, respectively. Boys and girls showed similar
spending patterns. Both groups spent around 40% of their income on music, while
boys spent slightly more on electronic equipment at 18%, however, girls spent most
of their income to food and videos than boys.
