What is the Scientific Method?
⚫ Scientific method is the technique for
1. investigating stuff
2. acquiring new knowledge
3. correcting previous knowledge
⚫ It’s basically a plan for gathering, organizing, and
communicating information.
⚫ The goal of any scientific method is to solve a problem or to
better understand your observations
Basic steps of scientific method
1. Make an observation
2. Ask a question
3. Collect Information
4. Form a hypothesis
5. Test hypothesis (experiment)
6. Analyze data
7. Draw conclusion
Everyone uses the scientific method
everyday, you just don’t know it
Observation/Question: Car won’t crank. Why?
Cars need gas and a battery to
Collect Information: run
Hypothesis: If I change the battery, then the
car will crank.
Test (Experiment): Replace the battery
Results: Car cranked right up.
Cars will not crank without a
Conclusion:
Scientific Method Steps 1-4
⚫ Begins with an observation (I see smoke in the
distance)
⚫ that leads to a question. (what’s causing the smoke)
⚫ Collect information about your topic (smoke usually
comes from fire)
⚫ Form a hypothesis – a possible answer that you can test;
always an if__, then__ statement. (If I see smoke, then
something is burning.)
Scientific Method Step 5
Conduct an Experiment
⚫A good experiment
tests only one
variable at a time.
⚫No experiment is a
failure.
Scientific Method Step 6
⚫ Analyze data
⚫ If data DOES NOT support hypothesis,
then you need to revise the hypothesis and
retest
⚫ If data supports hypothesis, then
additional testing is needed before
developing a theory
Scientific Method Step 7
⚫ Draw your Conclusion
⚫ After testing several times, report what
you found
⚫ Not looking for right or wrong answer, just
information
