Course DesCription:
This course introduces students to cutting-edge advancements and future trends in the electric vehicle
industry. It provides comprehensive knowledge on next-generation energy storage chemistries,
advanced permanent magnet and magnet-free traction motor topologies, and high-efficiency wide
band gap power semiconductor technologies. The course also addresses modern smart charging
infrastructures, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) ecosystems, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and the
hardware-software integration required for autonomous electric mobility.

Desirable awareness/skills:
Knowledge of Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, Basics of Electric & Hybrid Vehicles, and
Control Systems.

Course outComes:
On the successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
1. understand the fundamental working principles of emerging EV storage, powertrain, charging,
and fuel cell technologies.
2. apply engineering concepts to address the control, sizing, and architectural challenges of next-
gen EV systems.
3. analyze the efficiency, thermal, and grid-interaction performance of advanced EV propulsion
and power electronic stages.
4. evaluate advanced charging frameworks, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) setups, and autonomous
sensor payloads for real-world mobility solutions.

Beyond Lithium-Ion chemistries, Solid-State Batteries (SSBs), Sodium-ion (Na-ion) and Lithium-
Sulfur (Li-S) battery characteristics, energy density comparison, safety parameters, commercialization
bottlenecks. Supercapacitors and Flywheel energy storage for regenerative braking optimization.
Advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS), AI and Machine Learning implementations in BMS
for State-of-Charge (SoC) and State-of-Health (SoH) tracking, thermal runaway predictive modeling.
Hybrid Energy storage sytem(HESS).

Advanced Powertrain & Propulsion Systems: [06Hrs.]


Evolution of traction motor topologies, Radial flux vs. Axial Flux Motors (AFMs), Synchronous
Reluctance Motors (SynRM), Magnet-free traction motors and minimizing rare-earth elements of
dependency. In-Wheel (Wheel Hub) motor drive architecture, mechanical constraints, unsprung mass
issues, independent wheel torque vectoring control. Wide Bandgap (WBG) power semiconductors,
Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices in high-power traction inverters, efficiency
profiling, switching frequency improvements, and thermal design constraints.

Smart Charging & Grid Integration: [06Hrs.]


High-power charging infrastructures, static and dynamic (in-motion) inductive Wireless Power
Transfer (WPT), capacitive charging concepts, coils alignment control, Foreign Object Detection
(FOD) systems. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) ecosystem, technical requirements for Vehicle-to-Grid
(V2G), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Building (V2B) topologies, bi-directional onboard
chargers (OBC). Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for heavy-duty commercial EVs, battery
swapping networks vs. ultra-fast charging stations.

Connected, Autonomous, and Hydrogen Mobility: [06Hrs.]


Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs), Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC)
operations, hydrogen onboard storage tanks safety, hybrid battery-fuel cell drivetrain configurations.
Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV), centralized Vehicle Control Units (VCU), Over-the-Air (OTA)
firmware updates for powertrain control, CAN/LIN and Automotive Ethernet configurations.
Autonomous integration in EVs, power delivery networks for sensor suites, LiDAR, Radar, and
Vision processing hardware energy budgeting.
