Module 1 – Introduction to Microsoft Excel

What is Microsoft Excel?


Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application developed by Microsoft. It is used to organize,
analyze, and visualize data.

Why Learn Excel?


• Widely used in offices, businesses, and educational institutions.
• Helps in calculations, data analysis, and reporting.
• Improves productivity and decision-making.

Excel Interface Overview


When you open Excel, you see the following key components:
• Workbook – A file that contains one or more worksheets.
• Worksheet – A single spreadsheet consisting of rows and columns.
• Ribbon – The toolbar at the top with different tabs (Home, Insert, Page Layout, etc.).
• Columns – Vertical divisions labeled with letters (A, B, C...).
• Rows – Horizontal divisions labeled with numbers (1, 2, 3...).
• Cells – Intersection of a row and column, where data is entered.
• Formula Bar – Displays the content of the active cell.
• Status Bar – Shows information about the current worksheet state.

Creating and Saving a Workbook


1. Open Excel and click on Blank Workbook.
2. Enter data into cells.
3. To save: File → Save As → Choose location → Enter file name → Save.

Opening an Existing Workbook


1. Open Excel.
2. Go to File → Open.
3. Browse and select the file → Click Open.

Basic Navigation in Excel


• Use arrow keys to move between cells.
• Use Page Up/Page Down to scroll quickly.
• Press Ctrl + Home to go to the first cell (A1).
• Use Name Box to jump to a specific cell (e.g., type B10 and press Enter).
