Review of Related Literature

The impact of social media usage in academic

performance is a crucial issue that has significant attention in

educational background. Understanding the relationship between

social media and academic performance of students is crucial

for developing effective interventions and support systems to

address the challenges faced by students.

II. Lived experience of students using Social media

Social media helps student in their studies and improve

their mind set. Being a student we must be care of what we type

in our social media accounts, because if you are not aware of

what you are typing online it has negative impact to you as a

user. As we all social is platform that we can communicate with

other like for example of social media sites is Facebook,

Messenger, and etc. As a students we must prioritized our

studies to improve their skills as a students. Social media

competes with traditional media like print (newspaper and

magazines) and broadcast (radio and television). In the

Philippines , internet have changed the lifestyle of the

Filipino people because they rely primarily on the internet as

the medium of communication and information. For millennials ,

social media is the lifetime of information(Buenaobra , 2016).


The greatest percentage of the students has only one social

media accounts. Only few have no account. As social media sites

continue to grow popularity , most college students use

mechanism as their key window to get the information they need

and spend many hours checking social media sites(Wang et

al.,2011).Social media sites have become increasingly popular

means for self-Expression ,communication ,and influence,

particularly in relation to political activity

(Pablo et al.,2014).

III Impact of Social on the Students academic performance

Social media can impact student motivation to learn it can

affect their studies, because they have distracted. Social

media has negative impact on academic performance in school.

One of the main reason, because they mostly focus on their

cellphone and scrolling in social platforms like facebook,

Instagram, tiktok, and etc. And it has negative impact on their

studies , because they have not of what their teacher teaching

in the front. As a student we must focus on our study , because

studying is one of key for success. The advanced and improved

usage of social media platforms such as Facebook has become a

worldwide phenomenon quite some time. Though it all started has

been a hobby for several computer literates individual has

changed to become a social norm and existence-style for


students around the world (Nicole,2007).Facebook users often

experience poor academic performance. Also stated that social

media has a negative association with students academic

performance which is much greater than the advantages derived

through the use of social media platforms . People around the

globe have been addicted to the internet which has given rise

to more students using social media more often than before.

Investigation on impact of social media was done here in

Malaysia which focused on student’s academic performance in

tertiary institution.(Khan,2009)

IV. Summary and Conclusion

The researchers review of related literature and studies from

different bodies of source of information and a wide range of

materials. This review of related literature examine the impact

of social media on students academic performance and what are

the effects of Social media on their academic performance.

Social media can affect students lives and it has impact on

their motivation to learn.
