Mathematics (Major/Minor/ITEP)
All [Link] Semester-I students having mathematics as Major/Minor/ITEP will have to
submit one home assignment for the paper Classical Algebra (Code : MATH0100104) as
given below.
Instructions
1. You must prepare the assignment in your own hand writing on the A4 page.
2. The assignment must be written in neat and clean manner by giving margin on all sides
of the page.
3. The assignment carries 20 marks.
4. Assignments with more than 30% identical answers will be awarded zero marks.
5. Last date of submission: 25/11/2025 (3 P.M)
6. You will have to maintain a simple cover page with the following details.

Questions
Answer the following questions: (any five) 4 × 5 = 20
1. Expand sin4 θ cos2 θ in a series of cosines of multiple of θ
2. If α and β are the roots of the equation t2 + 2t + 4 = 0 and m is a positive integer, prove
that
2mπ
m m m+1
α +β =2 cos

3. (a) If x, y are real numbers, show that cosh(x + iy) = cosh x cos y + i sinh x sin y.
(b) If sin (θ + iϕ) = tan β + i sec β, show that cos 2θ cosh 2ϕ = 3.

4. Show that if an equation with rational coefficients has a surd root α+ √β, where α, β ∈ Q
and β is not a perfect square, then it has also the conjugate root α − β.
5. Form an equation whose roots are the reciprocals of the roots of
x4 − 5x3 + 7x2 − 4x + 5 = 0
Apply Descartes’ rule of signs to both equations to examine the nature of roots.
6. Solve x3 + 9x2 + 15x − 25 by Cardon’s method.
7. Reduce the following matrices to row echelon form, determine the rank, and identify the
basic columns.
1 2 3 3
A= 2 4 6 9
2 6 7 6
8. Suppose that A is an m × n matrix. Give a short explanation of why the following
statements is true.
(a) rank(A) = min{m, n}
(b) rank(A) < m, if one row in A is entirely zero.
(c) rank(A) < n, if one column in A is entirely zero.
(d) rank(A) < m, if one column in A is multiple of another rows.
