Essay Question Analysis


Lesson Outcomes:

• Understand the main essay genres and how they are asked in the PTE exam
• Be able to analyze any essay question quickly, differentiating between essay types
• Be able to effectively plan a PTE essay structure in a matter of minutes
• See examples of PTE essay brainstorms to guide your own brainstorm process

There are THREE main essay types in PTE: Argument/Opinion, Discussion, and Problem-
solution. We will examine each in detail.

Type 1: Some form of argument or opinion

This question type can be written in many ways, so it is very common.

You will need to choose a main argument or opinion and develop it. You can be FOR,
AGAINST, or sometimes, PARTIALLY AGREE OR DISAGREE (this one is slightly harder – more
on this soon).

Common phrasing for this question type includes:

• To what extent do you agree?


• Many people think… What is your opinion on this?
• Do you think…? Or…?
• Do you agree or disagree that…?
• Choose whether you agree or disagree with this statement (above) and discuss why
you chose that position.
• Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree.

On the following page, you will see the TWO possible structures for this essay type – ONE-
SIDED (recommended), and PARTIALLY AGREE (strong writers only)
Type 2: Discussion of two sides

You will be given a controversial issue (an issue with many opinions). You will write about the
advantages and the disadvantages of this issue in two body paragraphs.

Common phrasing for this question type includes:

• Discuss the benefits and downsides of…


• What are the advantages and problems involved in…?
• Discuss the reasons for and against…
• Has this been a positive or negative change?
• Discuss both views and give your opinion.
• Benefits, positive points, advantages, pros
• Downsides, problems, issues, disadvantages, cons, limitations, risks, negatives

The first box is a thesis statement/essay purpose.

The final box is the part where you give your opinion (“Has this been a positive or negative
change?”) – state which side of the discussion is stronger, and why.
Type 3: Problem-solution

You will be asked about a problem and possible solutions. Reading the question carefully is
important for this one!!!

Common phrasing for this question type includes:

• On of the most significant issues in society today is…


• What are some possible solutions for…?
• What are the causes of this problem and…?
• What are some of the problems linked to… and…?
• How can this be solved/What can people/individuals/govt do to solve this?
• Issues, problems, causes and effects, solutions, strategies, ways to solve, ways to
combat, ways to address
