1 Class 5 Computer Studies Answers

These answers are written in easy language. They are short but include the main points needed for a good
4–5 mark answer. The repeated photograph of the same page has been counted only once.

1.1 1. Operating System and Utility Software

1.1.1 (a) What is an operating system? Explain two functions of an operating
system.
An operating system is the main system software that controls a computer and helps the user work with
it. Examples are Windows, Linux and Android.
Two important functions are:
• It controls the computer hardware, such as the keyboard, mouse, printer and storage devices.
• It provides a way for the user to run programs, save files and communicate with the computer.
It also manages memory, files and other resources of the computer.
1.1.2 (b) What is the use of antivirus software?
Antivirus software protects a computer from harmful programs called viruses and other malware. It scans
files, folders, email attachments and storage devices. It finds suspicious programs and removes or keeps
them safely. It also gives warnings before a dangerous file is opened. Therefore, antivirus software helps
protect our data and keeps the computer working properly.
1.1.3 (c) What are the differences between system software and application
software?
System software Application software
It controls and manages the computer hardware. It helps the user perform a particular task.
It provides a platform for other programs to work. It works on the platform provided by system
software.
It usually works in the background. The user starts and uses it when needed.
Examples: Windows, Linux and device drivers. Examples: Word, Paint and Calculator.

1.1.4 (d) State the difference between general-purpose and special-purpose

application software.
General-purpose software Special-purpose software
It is made to do many different kinds of work. It is made to do one particular kind of work.
It can be used by many people for different tasks. It is designed for a specific person, office or job.
Examples: MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Examples: billing software, payroll software and
ticket-booking software.

1.1.5 (e) What is a backup? What is the need of a backup utility?

A backup is an extra copy of important files and data kept in another place, such as an external drive or
cloud storage. A backup utility helps us create and restore these copies.

A backup is needed because files may be deleted by mistake, damaged by a virus, lost when a computer
stops working, or destroyed by theft or fire. With a backup, we can get our important work back safely.

1.2 2. Computer Generations and Computer History

1.2.1 (a) Differentiate between Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine and
Analytical Engine.
Difference Engine Analytical Engine
It was a mechanical calculating machine. It was a mechanical general-purpose computer
design.
It was mainly made to calculate tables and It was designed to perform many kinds of
repeated mathematical values. calculations.
It used repeated addition and did not have a It could be programmed using punched cards.
general program.
It had a limited purpose. It had a store for memory and a mill for
processing, like modern computers.

The Difference Engine was a calculator, while the Analytical Engine was a design for a programmable
computer. These points are based on descriptions from the Computer History Museum and the Science
Museum.[1] [2]
1.2.2 (b) What are the characteristics of the second generation of computers?
The second generation of computers had the following characteristics:
• Transistors were used instead of large vacuum tubes.
• They were smaller, faster and more reliable than first-generation computers.
• They produced less heat and used less electricity.
• They used assembly language and high-level languages such as FORTRAN and COBOL.
• They were mainly used for business, science and engineering work.
1.2.3 (c) Write the full forms of ENIAC, EDSAC and UNIVAC.
• ENIAC – Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer.
• EDSAC – Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator.
• UNIVAC – Universal Automatic Computer.
1.2.4 (d) What are the characteristics of the fifth generation of computers?
The fifth generation of computers has these important characteristics:
• It is based on Artificial Intelligence, or AI.
• It can understand human language and speech more easily.
• It uses very powerful processors and parallel processing.
• It is used in robots, expert systems, smart assistants and modern research.
• It aims to make computers learn, reason and solve problems like humans.
1.2.5 (e) State two characteristics and two limitations of a computer.
Two characteristics:
1. A computer works very fast and can complete many calculations in a short time.

2

2. A computer gives accurate results when the instructions and data are correct.
Two limitations:
1. A computer cannot think, feel or make decisions like a human without instructions.
2. It gives a wrong result if the input or instructions are wrong. This is called GIGO, or “Garbage In,
Garbage Out.”

1.3 3. Applying the Same Formatting in Microsoft Word

1.3.1 (a) How do you apply the same formatting to the rest of the text in Word
without doing it again and again? Write the steps.
Use the Format Painter tool. It copies the formatting of one text and applies it to other text. The steps are:
1. Select the text that already has the required formatting.
2. Open the Home tab and click Format Painter in the Clipboard group.
3. The mouse pointer changes to a paintbrush.
4. Drag the paintbrush over the text that needs the same formatting.
5. To apply the formatting to many separate places, double-click Format Painter and select each text
one by one.
6. Press the Esc key when finished.
Format Painter can copy font, size, colour, style and other formatting.[3]

1.4 4. Lab Session Activity

1.4.1 Which antivirus is installed on the allotted computer? Run a scan of the
D: drive.
This answer depends on the antivirus installed on the particular computer. To find it and scan the drive:
1. Open This PC from the desktop.
2. Right-click the D: drive.
3. Choose the option Scan with followed by the name of the installed antivirus, such as Microsoft
Defender.
4. Wait until the scan is complete and read the result shown by the antivirus.
The exact antivirus name and scan result should be written after checking the computer in the school lab.

2 Quick Revision Words

Operating system: Main software that controls the computer.
Antivirus: Software that finds and protects the computer from viruses.
Backup: An extra copy of important files.
Format Painter: A Word tool used to copy formatting.
Transistor: An electronic component used in second-generation computers.
Artificial Intelligence: The ability of a computer system to perform tasks that normally need human
intelligence.
