BMPS Abstract

The document introduces a flexible bus system designed to enhance transportation services by allowing passengers to book rides based on demand, with real-time adjustments to scheduling and routing. It proposes a heuristic path-planning algorithm called BusNav, which optimizes bus dispatching for cost reduction and passenger comfort. Experimental results indicate that BusNav significantly lowers operating costs while improving user satisfaction compared to traditional methods.

ABSTRACT

The rapid advancement of vehicle intelligence and the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), traveler’s
expectations for enhanced commuting experiences are steadily rising. To deliver smarter and
more convenient transportation services, it is essential to design route arrangements that align
with passenger demand. Yet, due to the highly dynamic and complex nature of real world traffic
conditions, conventional path-planning strategies are becoming inadequate. To address these
challenges, a novel bus service framework, known as the flexible bus system, has been
introduced. This model is demand-responsive: passengers can book rides based on their
requirements, and buses are dispatched once a threshold of reservations is reached. The
scheduling and routing of these vehicles are adjusted in real time according to passenger
requests and road conditions, thereby enhancing efficiency and user satisfaction. To further
optimize cost effectiveness and improve the overall travel experience, a heuristic path-planning
algorithm named BusNav is proposed. BusNav consists of two main processes—path
extraction and trip allocation—which collaboratively enable effective bus dispatching tailored
to both operational cost reduction and passenger comfort. Experimental evaluations
demonstrate that, compared to traditional methods, the BusNav approach significantly lowers
operating expenses while enhancing passenger satisfaction.
