Brand Analysis: Material Development

1. Freewriting: For a set amount of time or a specific amount of space (a page), and without
pausing, write everything you know or don’t know (meaning questions you have) about a
brand you’re curious about. Then, read what you’ve written and highlight whatever is of
interest to you. Finally, pick out one of these highlighted passages and repeat the process.

2. Looping: Like Freewriting, but after you do step one above, write a sentence summarizing
the most interesting idea you generated. What out of all the freewriting you did makes you
most curious? Now, develop additional writing stemming from this.

3. Listing: Starting with a brand you’re curious about, make a list of everything you know or
don’t know about it that interests you. Then, look for connections between items. If you get
other items to list from this, add them. Now, arrange this into groups that belong together.

4. Clustering or Mapping: Write the name of a brand you’re curious about in the center of a
piece of paper. What are some details or things that stem from it or are connected to it in
some way? Circle these and develop more things that connect to these. Keep going until
you fill a page.

5. Cubing: Look at a brand six different ways and develop writing about it that delves into
each:
a. Describe it.
b. Compare it to something different or similar.
c. Classify it. What does it belong with?
d. Analyze it.
e. Apply it. How can it be used?

6. Bombard your brand with questions: what, how, why, who, when, where?
