WHAT IS SCIENCE?
• Science is a way of thinking, observing and doing things to understand the world we
live in and to uncover the secrets of the universe.
• Science is like a giant and unending jigsaw puzzle. Every new discovery we make adds
another piece to that puzzle.
• The title of the book “Curiosity” suggests the basic element which one should have
to explore Science.
• Science is everywhere — in the kitchen, on the playground, in the sky, and
underwater etc.
Key Concepts of Science
1. Curiosity is the key!
• Asking questions is the beginning of all scientific thinking. You are already doing
science in daily life — every time you ask “Why?” or “How?”
• It’s like a big adventure we ask questions, explore the world and try to understand
how things work.
2. Science is like a big never-ending puzzle.
• Each discovery is a new piece. As Every solution leads to new questions and new
questions lead to new discoveries; and it is a never-ending process.
• Sometimes we change pieces if we find something new (new facts can change old
beliefs). Ex- Atom was considered the smallest, indivisible particle until the discovery
of electron.
3. Science is all around us:
• Mountains, deserts, oceans, forests.
• In our homes – cooking, using magnets, materials around us.
• In space – stars, Sun, Moon.
What Will We Explore in This Book?
1. Planet Earth – Our home and the only known place with life.
2. Plants and Animals – How they grow, change, and adapt to survive various climatic
conditions.
3. Food – What we eat, where it comes from, and why it's important.
4. Materials Around Us – Plastic, metal, paper, cloth – what they are made of.
5. Water – Its forms (ice, water, steam), uses, and how it behaves.

6. Heat – Understanding hot and cold.
7. Outer Space – Sun, Moon, stars, and galaxies.
8. Experiments & Observations – Doing small activities to learn.
How Do Scientists Work?
• Scientists observe → Ask questions → Guess (make a hypothesis) → Test the guess →
Find results.
• Example: Pen stops writing → You guess it’s empty → You check ink → Find it’s empty
→ Your guess was correct!
• Dal is spilled on the stove → Check if pressure cooker was sealed properly → Find the
lid was loose → Conclude steam escaped and spilled the dal → Guess was correct
• Tyre is flat → Check if the tyre has air → Use water and detergent to observe bubble
formation → find the hole → Conclude tyre is punctured → Guess was correct
