Assignment 2 - Computer Performance

The document outlines an assignment consisting of five problems related to processor performance, including calculations of clock rates, execution times, and MIPS rates for different machines. It requires students to analyze instruction cycles, benchmark program execution times, and the impact of specific instruction types on performance. The assignment aims to enhance understanding of processor efficiency and performance metrics.

Assignment (2)

1. For the following processor obtain the performance:

Clock rate = 500 MHz
No. of instructions executed = 800
Average no. of steps needed / machine instruction = 20
2. A program contains 1000 instructions. Out of that 25% instructions require 4
clock cycles, 40% instructions require 5 clock cycles and remaining require 3
clock cycles for execution. Find the total time required to execute the
program running in a 2 GHz machine.
3. Consider two different machines, with two different instruction sets, both of
which have a clock rate of 200 MHz. The following measurements are
recorded on the two machines running a given set of benchmark programs:

a) Determine the effective CPI, MIPS rate, and execution time for each
machine.
b) Comment on the results.
4. Four benchmark programs are executed on three computers with the
following results:
The table shows the execution time in seconds, with 100,000,000 instructions
executed in each of the four programs. Calculate the MIPS values for each
computer for each program.
5. A program has 10% divide instructions. All non-divide instructions take one
cycle. All divide instructions take 50 cycles.
a) What is the CPI of this program on this processor?
b) What percent of time is spent just doing divides?
