Assignment 2

The document presents a series of problems related to shear force, bending moment, and bending stress in beams of various configurations and loads. It includes calculations for cantilever and simply supported beams under point loads and uniformly distributed loads, along with the construction of shear force and bending moment diagrams. Additionally, it addresses the determination of maximum bending stress and the dimensions of beams based on load requirements.

Problems on shear force and bending moment

1. A cantilever Beam 5 m long carried point loads of 3 kN, 3 kN and 3 kN at a distance of 1.5 m, 3 m
and 4,5 m respectively from the fixed end, In addition to this the beam carries an uniformly
distributed load of 1kN/m over the entire length of the beam. Draw SF and BM diagrams of the bea
2. A beam 6 m long is simply supported at the ends carries a uniformly distributed load of 2Kn/m over
the middle 2 m length and point loads of 1 kN of 1 kN and 4 kN at distances of the left end
respectively. Draw SFD and BMD and determine the magnitude and position of the maximum BM.
3. A beam simply supported at its ends has a span of 6 m. It is loaded with a gradually varying load
of 750 N/m from the left-hand support to 1500 N/m to the right-hand support. Construct the SF and
BM diagrams and find the magnitude and position of the maximum BM over the beam.
4. A simply supported beam of 6 m span is loaded with a uniformly distributed load of1.5 kN/m over
the entire span and concentrated load of 4 kN and 5 kN at distances of 2 and 4 m from the left hand
support respectively. Find the magnitude and position of the maximum BM.
5. Draw the shear force and bending moment of the given beam.

6. An overhanging beam of 20 m span is carrying an unifonoly distributed load of 2kN/m over the
length of 15 m at a distance 5 m from the left free end and point loads 8 kN and 5 kN, at free
end and at a distance 3 m from the free end respectively. Sketch the SFD and BMD for the beam.
Locate the point of contraflexure.

7. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for 12 m span overhanging beam, which
overhangs on both sides. It is subjected to a u.d.1 of 8 kN/m on left side overhanging portion of
length 5 m and a u.d.I of 10 kN/m on right side overhanging portion of length 4 m. Indicate the
numerical values at all salient points.

Problems on bending stress

1. A cantilever beam of length 2m fails when a load of 2KN is applied at the free end. If the
section is 40mmx60mm, find the stress at the failure.

2.A rectangular beam 200mm deep and 300mm wide is simply supported over the span of 8m.
What uniformly distributed load per metre the beam may carry, if the bending stress is not
exceed 120N/mm2.

3.A beam is simply supported and carries a uniformly distributed load of 40KN/m run over the
whole span. The section of the beam is rectangular having depth as [Link] the maximum
stress in the material of the beam is 120N/mm2and moment of inertia of the section
is 7x108mm4, find the span of the beam.

4. Calculate the maximum stress induced in a cast iron pipe of external diameter 40mm,of internal
diameter 20mm and length 4m when the pipe is supported at its ends and carries a point load of
80N at its centre.

5. A rectangular beam 300mm deep is simply supported over a span of 4m. Determine the
uniformly distributed load per meter which the beam may carry, if the bending stress should
not exceed 120N/[Link] I=8x106mm4.
6. A square beam 20mmx20mm in section and 2m long is supported at the ends. The beam fails
when a point load of 400N is applied at the centre of the beam. What uniformly distributed
load per meter length will break a cantilever of the same material 40mm wide,60mm deep and
3m long?

7. A timber beam of rectangular section is to support a load of 20KN uniformly distributed over
a span of 3.6m when beam is simply supported. If the depth is to be twice the breadth, and the
stress in timber is not exceed 7N/mm2, find the dimensions of the cross section. How could you
modify the dimensions with 20KN of concentrated load is present at centre with same breadth
and depth ratio.
