MAY 26 BATCH

S1 Revision Worksheet
Month-01 (July 2025)
Syllabus: Chapter 02 (up to Ex : 2C)
1. Two shops A and B recorded the ages of their workers.

By comparing estimated means for each shop, determine which shop is better at employing old workers.
[Shop B (mean 51 years) employs older workers than Shop A (mean 50 years)]

Time to Frequency
2. Chloe enjoys playing computer games. Her parents think that she the
spends too much time playing games. Chloe decides to keep a record nearest
of the amount of time she plays computer games each day for 50 minute
days. She draws up a grouped frequency table to show these data. 10 - 14 1
The mid-point of each class is represented by x and its corresponding
frequency is 𝑓. 15 - 19 5
(You may assume 𝑓𝑥 = 1275) 20 - 24 18
a. Calculate an estimate of the mean time Chloe spends on playing
computer games each day. 25 - 29 15
Chloe’s parents thought that mean was too high and suggested that she try to 30 - 34 7
reduce the time spent
on computer games. Chloe monitored the amount of time she spent on 35 - 39 3
games for another 40 days
40 - 44 1
and found that at the end of 90 days her overall mean time was 26 minutes.
b. Find an estimate for the mean amount of time Chloe spent on games for the 40 days.
c. Comment on the two mean values.
[𝒂. 𝜇 = 25.5; 𝒃. 26.63]

3. A child at a junior school records the maximum temperature, in ℃, for seven days at his school. The
results are given below:
15.7 16.1 16.2 47.6 17.4 18.6 16.7
a. Find the mean and median of these data. [𝜇 = 21.2, median = 16.7]
The child’s teacher realises that the figure 47.6 should be 17.6
a. Write down what effect this will have on the median and mean.

4. Meryl collected wild mushrooms every day for a week. When she got home each day she weight them to
the nearest 100 g. The weights are shown are shown below.
500 700 400 300 900 700 700
a. Write down the mode for these data. [700]
b. Calculate the mean for these data. [600]
c. Find the median for these data. [700]
On the next day, Meryl collects 650 g of wild mushrooms.
d. Write down the effect this will have on the mean, the mode, and median.
[Mean will increase; Median will decrease; Mode will remain unchanged]

5. The daily mean visibility, v metres, for Singapore in September and October was recorded each day.
The data are summarized as follows:
September: 𝑛 = 31, 𝑣 = 724 000
October: 𝑛 = 30, 𝑣 = 632 000
a) Calculate the mean visibility in each month. [September: 23 355 m; October: 21 067 m]
b) Calculate the mean visibility for the total recording period. [22 230 m]

6. The grouped frequency table below shows the distributions of the weights of 16-week-old puppies.
a) Write down the class boundaries for the third group. [1.55 and 1.75]
b) Work out the midpoint of the second group. [1.45]
c) Find the median.
d) What is the modal class? [1.8 − 1.9]

Weight (kg) Frequency

1.2 − 1.3 8

1.4 − 1.5 28

1.6 − 1.7 32

1.8 − 1.9 33

7. A farmer keeps a record of the weekly milk yield of the herd of seven cows over a period of six months.
He finds that the mean yield is 24 litres. He buys another cow that he is told will produce 28 litres of
milk a week. Work out the effect this will have on the mean milk yield of his cows.
[mean yield will increase]

8. State, with a reason, which of the following statements are not true:
a) The weight of apples is discrete data. [False; Weight is continuous]
b) The number of apples on the trees in a garden is discrete data. [True]
c) The amount of time it takes a train to make a journey is continuous data. [True]
d) Namira collected data on car colours by standing at the end of the road and writing down the car
colours. The data she collected is quantitative.
[False; Colour is qualitative data since it’s descriptive]
