Module Descriptors
NAM2108 Hydrodynamics in Naval Architecture
This is an introductory module in fluid mechanics and marine hydrodynamics. The first half of this
module focuses on the fluid statics and integral control volume analysis, which include hydrostatic
force on the flat and curved plate, conservation of mass, momentum and energy and their applications
in engineering problems. Following the integral control volume analysis, the concepts of dimensional
analysis and similitude are presented. In the second half of the module, some special topics related to
marine hydrodynamics are covered, which includes potential flow theory and its superposition of
potential flows and introduction to linear wave theory. Lectures and pre-class assignments focus on
conceptual understanding, and tutorials mainly aim at improving problem-solving skills. Assessment
consists of a combination of coursework involving completion of Assignment and lab report, and a
written examination covering both fluid mechanics and marine hydrodynamics principles.
NAM3105 Analysis and Design of Marine Structures 1
This module focuses on the global response of ship i.e. analysis and assessment of forces acting on
ships and their influence on hull structural strength. It introduces the fundamental principles governing
ship behaviour at sea, treating the hull as a beam subjected to still water and wave-induced loads.
Topics include quasi-static analysis of longitudinal strength, determination of weight and buoyancy
distributions, calculation of shear forces and bending moments, evaluation of longitudinal bending and
shear stress distributions , analysis of hull girder response in still water and wave conditions, and
introduction to composite beam behaviour in ship structures. It also covers the fundamentals of ship
hull girder vibration. Lectures and guided learning activities focus on developing conceptual
understanding of global ship structural behaviour, while tutorials emphasise analytical and problem-
solving skills. Assessment consists of a combination of coursework involving design /Assignment tasks,
and a written examination.
NAM3106 Analysis and Design of Marine Structures 2
The module is a continuation of NAM3105 Analysis and Design of Marine Structures 1 and focuses on
the introduction of transverse and local Strength of Ship Structures. The module introduces the
concepts of structural instability, including buckling of structural members, as well as practical
approaches to strain measurement and stress evaluation in ships. Key topics include buckling
behaviour of structure ,analysis of truss systems, two-dimensional stress and strain analysis, including
transformation of stresses and strains. This module also covers the topics - statistical analysis of a time
series of waves and wave- induced responses and fatigue design of ship structures. Lectures and pre-
class learning activities focus on developing a deep conceptual understanding of structural behaviour
and failure mechanisms, while tutorials emphasise mathematical modelling and problem-solving
skills. Assessment consists of a group coursework on design, fabricate and load test of a truss crane
structure and written examination covering all subjects of the module.
