Notes Simple Machines

The document outlines a lesson on simple machines, defining them and explaining their types, including inclined planes, pulleys, levers, screws, wedges, and wheels with axles. It includes definitions, examples, and descriptions of how these machines function and their applications in everyday life. Additionally, it poses questions for homework that encourage practical understanding and real-life applications of simple machines.

Lesson -Simple Machines

Learning Objective:

• Define Simple Machines and types of Simple Machines

• Explain how inclined plane, pulley, screw, wedge, lever, wheel and axle
works as a simple machine
• Identify and describe Simple machines within everyday items.
Define the following:

1. Machine: An object that allows us to do our work with less effort.

2. Fulcrum: A fixed point around which a lever can be moved.

Answer the following:

1. What is an inclined plane?

An inclined plane is a simple machine that is used to lower or rise heavy
objects with the help of sloped surface.
2. What is a pulley? Give examples where it is used.
A pulley consists of a wheel and a groove and a rope passing through it. It
is used to: pull water from the well, hoist a flag, in elevators, to lift bricks
at a construction site etc
3. What is a lever? Describe the 3 types of levers with diagrams.
A lever is a simple machine made up of firm rod that can be moved
around a fixed point on it. The fixed point is called the fulcrum. The
object we want to move is called the load. The force we use to move an
object is called the effort. Levers are divided in to three parts.
Class 1 Lever:
In class 1 lever, the fulcrum lies between the load and the effort. Eg: See
saw, beam balance.
Class 2 Lever:
In class 2 lever, the load lies between the fulcrum and effort. Eg: Lemon
squeezer, nutcracker.

Class 3 Lever:
In class 3, the effort lies between the load and the fulcrum. Eg: Fishingrod,
ice tongs, stapler.

Concept Map (Draw it in the second blank page. Write one example for each type
of simple machine)

Give reasons:

1. Why wheel cannot be used as a machine without an axle?

A piece of rod passing through the center of the wheel is called an axle. The
axle supports the wheel and allows the wheel to turn on the same axis.
Without an axle, a wheel cannot be used as a machine.

H.W Thinking skills:

1. A rock has blocked a road after a landslide. How can a lever be used to
remove a rock that has blocked a road after a landslide?
H. W Cross curricular link:
1. Imagine you are designing a playground for your school. Draw your
playground and include at least three simple machines.? (Blank side of
your notebook)

H.W Real life applications:

1. List any five simple machines that you see at home.

H.W. Value based questions:

1. Ravi noticed an elderly woman struggling to carry a heavy box up the
steps. He used a cart and ramp to help her bring the box inside her home.
What value do you learn from Ravi's actions, and how does using a ramp
make the task easier?
