A KING IS BORN

SCENE ONE

(Joseph is excited because he has found the love of his life then an Angel appears to Mary to tell
her a good news)

JOSEPH: (Pacing up and down the stage) I think I have found the woman for me. She makes me
happy anytime I think about her (smiling wide)

How do I tell her how I feel? Maybe I should write a letter to her (mute and thinking) wait a minute! I
can sing her a song.

(Joseph begins to mime to Perfect by Ed Sheeran)

(Mary walks in while he was still singing)

MARY: (clears her throat)

JOSEPH: oh my love! (Walks towards her) how long have you been standing there?

MARY: Joseph, seriously ehn! Your voice sounds magical. Every time I hear it, my heart skips a beat
(blushing)

JOSEPH: (reach out to a stool) sit here my love, I have something I need to show you. (Hurry away
from the stage)

(Mary sits and mutter words to herself)

ANGEL: (clears his throat)

MARY: Joseph, that was so fast

ANGEL: Hi Mary

MARY: Hi … Yo…U must be …

ANGEL: Gabriel … My name is Gabriel. Do not be afraid, I have good news for you (smiles funny). You
have found favour in the sight of God. You shall give birth to a son. His name shall be called
Emmanuel and he will save his people form their sins.

MARY: Ah! Ah! Gabriel, I know no man. Infact I just met this Joseph guy. I’m not even sure if he is
the one. I want to follow God’s way, bed undefiled. (Turns and rubs neck to portray shyness)

ANGEL: The Holy Spirit will come on you and you will conceive. This beyond man’s understanding.
Just so you know, your cousin Elizabeth is also pregnant. This is divine

(Mary stands surprised)

SCENE TWO

(Mary pays Elizabeth a visit, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy and she bows down to
worship the baby in Mary’s womb)

ELIZABETH: (singing while trying to fold some clothes) (sings see what the Lord has done)

MARY: hello Elizabeth (smiling)

Please sit here (they both smile)

I was coming over to your house to tell you I am …

MARY: (cuts in) Pregnant … (surprising look)

ELIZABETH: Yes Mary, how did you know about this?

MARY: The angel Gabriel told me about it but you… I just (pause and puts hands on chest). I am so
happy for you. Come here (Mary reaches out to Elizabeth to give her a hug)

ELIZABETH: Holds her stomach the very moment I heard your voice Mary, the baby in my womb
kicked

MARY: (places her hand on Elizabeth’s stomach) you are blessed sweetheart

(She turns to the crowd) I am basking in God’s love and mercy. This is the best thing that has ever
happened to me. God is great and his mercies are beyond measure (praises God)

(Both gets excited and live the stage)

SCENE THREE

(Joseph family members gather to forbid him from marrying Mary)

JOSEPH’S MUM: my son, what did I do to you? What have you chosen to bring shame to me and this
family ehn?…

UNCLE 1: The part that is annoying me is that the girl is pregnant and he said he is not responsible,
so why are you still carrying her matter on your head like someone selling GALA?

UNCLE 2: Bia! This is not America oh! Where children do not listen to their parents oh, you must
listen to us because I am not ready to run kiti kiti kata kata when this problem grows beyond this.

AUNTY 1: I don dey look this Mary girl with one corner eye, I talk am say her way no pure. Joseph

marry that girl you go pay me for all the suffer wey I suffer with your mama.

JOSEPH: Mary is not like that

JOSEPH DAD: Machionu there (in igbo keep quiet) you have heard your uncles and aunties. You
better call that marriage off.

AUNTY 1: Abeg make I dey go village meeting, I no fit dey here dey talk this kind matter.

(Everyone stands up one after the other leaving Joseph to stand alone, while standing alone UNCLE 1
returns back to the stage).

UNCLE 1: Joseph you see ehn, me and my family are solidly behind you, forget all I was saying just
now. What I mean is that, my daughter Rebecca will soon come home from the City and I do not
mind giving her to you free of charge…

(Joseph left him on stage)

UNCLE 1: (to the audience) my people did I say anything bad?

(Joseph sits all alone wondering what to do then the angel appears to him)

JOSEPH: (sad) Mary, why will you go and get pregnant for another man… and now my people do not
want me to marry you but I love you and I cannot leave you.

ANGEL: (walks in) Joseph…

JOSEPH: I taught I asked all of you to leave me alone (turns quickly to see it was an angel) great one

ANGEL: I know all that you are going through Joseph son of David. Infact, I am even aware of Mary’s
pregnancy. Mary is a good person so do not put her away. That which is in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son and you must call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their
sins.

SCENE FIVE

(Joseph and Mary trying to leave town)

SCENE SIX

(Joseph takes Mary to the hospital to give birth but they couldn’t get a bed so they were sent away)

SCENE SEVEN

(Joseph takes Mary to staple and placed the baby in a cot)

SCENE EIGHT

ANGEL APPEARS TO WISE MEN

ANGEL: Favored men (they all run to hide)

ANGEL: Fear not because unto you this day is born a savior Jesus for he has come to redeem man
from destruction.

THE WISE MEN RUNS OFF THE STAGE

SCENE NINE

(The king is troubled as he walks up and down the stage)

GUARD: My King permit me to call the best entertainers to make you happy away (guards walk
away)

GUARD: My king

KING: Go call me the seers let them explain to me this mystery

GUARD: Yes, my king

KING: (stands up and laugh) A new born King!!!

KING: My good people, what does the book say about this new born king?

SEER 1: I think I like what I am seeing

SEER 2: A child is born he shall take over the world. He shall be called wonderful, counsellor. His
reign shall have no end.

KING: Really? (Laughs) a new born king?!! No man born of a woman can take my throne. I am King
Herod, I am not threatened

GUARD 2: My king there are some wise men from the east here to see you

KING: bring them in

WISE MEN WALKS IN

WISE MEN: (Chorus) long live the king

KING: You are welcome to my kingdom

WISE MAN 1: My king, we are men from the east in search of the new born king

WISE MAN 2: The savior who is Christ the Lord

KING: Oh yes, yes the new born king… how did you find out about him?

WISE MAN 3: a star led us and vanished when we got here

KING: Well, you see, I have also been searching for this new king so I can worship him. Please, when
you find him bring me words so I can go and worship him too. Go! Go at once delay is dangerous.

WISE MEN: (Chorus) long live the king

(Wise men leaves the stage)

KING: GUARD!!!

GUARDS: yes, your highness

(Guards runs out of the stage)

SCENE TEN

(Sound effect of babies crying)

SCENE ELEVEN

(Mary and Joseph walks and lay the child on a prepared stand)

(Wise men also comes and present their gifts)
