INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER NOTES

1. Meaning of a Computer
A computer is an electronic device that accepts data, processes it according to instructions,
stores data, and produces meaningful information.

Data: Raw facts and figures that have not been processed.
Information: Processed data that is meaningful and useful.

2. Characteristics of a Computer
• Speed - Computers perform millions of calculations within seconds.
• Accuracy - Produces correct results when given correct instructions.
• Storage Capacity - Stores large amounts of data.
• Reliability - Works continuously without getting tired.
• Versatility - Performs different tasks.
• Automation - Performs tasks automatically after instructions are given.

3. Functions of a Computer
Input: Entering data into a computer. Examples: Keyboard, mouse, scanner.

Processing: Manipulating data to produce information. Done by CPU.

Output: Displaying processed information. Examples: Monitor, printer, speakers.

Storage: Keeping data for future use. Examples: Hard disk, flash disk.

4. Parts of a Computer System


Hardware: Physical parts of a computer that can be touched. Examples: Monitor, CPU,
keyboard.

Software: Programs and instructions that tell a computer what to do.


Types of software:
System Software - Windows, Linux, macOS.
Application Software - Microsoft Word, Excel, browsers.

5. Components of a Computer
Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the brain of the computer.

Control Unit (CU): Controls activities of the computer.


Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU): Performs calculations and logical operations.
Registers: Temporary storage areas inside the CPU.
6. Types of Computers
Supercomputer - Used for scientific research and weather forecasting.
Mainframe Computer - Used by banks and large organizations.
Minicomputer - Medium-sized computers used by organizations.
Microcomputer - Personal computers such as desktops and laptops.

Second Generation: Used transistors.

Fourth Generation: Uses microprocessors.
Fifth Generation: Based on artificial intelligence.
