Box Model Approach

The document outlines a roadmap for implementing a box model approach, detailing eight steps that include plume thermodynamics, dilution, aerosol entrainment, and particle growth processes. Each step is accompanied by relevant equations and parameters necessary for calculations, referencing works by Bier from 2022 and 2024. The overall goal is to simulate the behavior of aerosol particles within a plume under varying thermodynamic conditions.

ROADMAP TO IMPLEMENT BOX MODEL APPROACH

Step 01: Plume thermodynamics

Temperature & water vapor evolution over time. The equations used are

• Slope of Mixing Line: Eq. (1) Bier, 2024

• Water Vapor Evolution: dxv/dt = −ω(t) × (xv(t) − xva) Eq. (9) Bier, 2022
• Temperature Evolution: dT/dt = −ω(t) × (T(t) − Ta) Eq. (10) Bier, 2022

Other required parameters: Ta, pa, RHice,a, EIv, Q, η, TE (Constant baseline) Table 2 Bier, 2024

Step 02: Plume Dilution

To drives temperature, humidity and aerosol entrainment.

• Fludiles trajectory ensemble: Dk(t) = [T3D,k(t) − T3D,a] / [T3D,E − T3D,a]

where, T3D,E = 580K and T3D,a =220K Eq. (2) Bier, 2024

Requires the actual FLUDILES trajectory dataset of 1000 merged trajectories. Already mailed to Bier and
Zink for dataset.

Step 03: Plume Area and Aerosol Entrainment

To know how many ambient particles have entered the plume at each timestep.

• Effective exit area: ÂE = AE × (U∞ + Ujet,E) / U∞ = AE × 1.92 Eq. (8) Bier, 2024
with U∞ = 250 m/s and Ujet,E = 230 m/s
• Aerosol Number concentration: Naer(t) = naer × (Ta × ÂE / TE) × (D(t)^−1 − 1)
Eq. (11) Bier. 2024
• Number of new particles entrained in each timestep: ΔNaer(t) = (α(t) − α(t−Δt)) × naer
Eq. (12) Bier 2024

Other required parameter: naer, rd, σaer, κ, DRH Table 2 of Bier 2024

Step 04: Simulation Particle (SIP) Initialisation

At each timestep when RHwat > DRH, a new ensemble of ~110 SIPs is created representing the newly
entrained particles.

• SIP initialization algorithm Sect. 3.3.2 of Bier 2024

Appendix A of Bier 2024

Step 05: Hygroscopic Growth and Activation
Each SIP starts dry. As plume humidity rises above DRH, the particle begins absorbing water and grows.

• Saturation ratio: SK = [r³ − rd³] / [r³ − rd³(1−κ)] × exp[2σMw / (RTρw r)]

Eq. 14 Bier 2024
• Activation Criteria awat = (r³ − rd³) / (r³ − rd³(1−κ))
Sect. 3.3.3 of Bier 2024

Step 06: Condensational Droplet Growth

Once a particle is activated, it grows by condensation.

• Mass growth rate of a single droplet: dmw/dt = 4πr(ev − eK,w) / (FM×βm⁻¹ + FH×βt⁻¹)
Eq. 13 Bier 2024

Referring to Bier 2022 for more supporting thermodynamic functions. I will see it.

Step 07: Homogeneous Freezing

When a droplet cools below its freezing temperature it instantly freezes into an ice crystal.

• Freezing temperature of water droplet: Tfrz = Tfrz,0 − ΔT(awat)

where ΔT = a×Δawat² + b×Δawat + c
and Δawat = 1 − awat, a = 345.746, b = 100.977, c = 0.01687 valid for awat ≥ 0.90
Appendix B Eq. B1–B2, Bier 2024

Step 08: Depositional Ice Crystal Growth
