Measuring the collected volume, V

1. Allow the water to flow steadily through the HB 016 apparatus.

2. Direct the outlet water into the hydraulic bench measuring tank.
3. Close the measuring-tank discharge valve so that water begins to collect.
4. Observe the tank scale.
5. Select a convenient volume interval, such as:

V =10 L ,15 L, or 20 L
The collected volume is the difference between the final and initial tank readings:

V =V f −V i
For example, if the water level rises from 5 L to 20 L:

V =20−5=15 L
Measuring the collection time, t

Use a stopwatch:
1. Start the stopwatch at the same moment the water begins collecting in the
measuring tank.
2. Stop the stopwatch when the water reaches the selected final volume.
3. Record the elapsed time in seconds.
The manual’s procedure also directs the operator to record the measuring-tank volume
and time for each flow setting.

Calculating the actual flow rate

V
Q actual =
t
For example, when 20 L of water is collected in 80 seconds:

20
Qactual = =0.25 L/s
80
Convert to liters per minute:
Qactual =0.25(60)=15 L/min

Calculate the percentage error using:

Qmeter −Qactual
% Error=∣ ∣× 100
