MA 101: Engineering Mathematics I
Tutorial Sheet 4: Limit and Continuity

Definition 0.0.1. Let A ⊂ R and f : A → R. Suppose that (a, ∞) ⊂ A for some a ∈ R then we say
limx→∞ f (x) = L if given any ϵ > 0 there exists a real number K = K( depending on ϵ) > a such
that for any x > K, we have |f (x) − L| < ϵ.

1. Determine whether the following limits exists. If yes, find their value:

2
(a) *limx→∞ x2 e−1/x − 1 .
x−|x|
(b) *limx→0 x
.
1−cos x−(x2 /2)
(c) limx→0 x4
.
(d) limx→0 sin x12 .

x−x
(e) limx→∞ √
x+x
.

2. *Let f : [0, 2] → R be a continuous function and f (0) = f (2). Prove that there exist real
numbers c1 , c2 ∈ [0, 2] such that c2 − c1 = 1 and f (c2 ) = f (c1 ).

3. *Let f : [0, π] → R be defined as f (0) = 0 and f (x) = x sin x1 − x1 cos x1 . Discuss the continuity
of f on [0, π].

4. Let f : (0, ∞) → R. Prove that limx→∞ f (x) = L if and only if limx→0+ f (1/x) = L.

5. Let f : R → (0, ∞) satisfy f (x + y) = f (x)f (y) for all x, y ∈ R. Suppose f is continuous at

x = 0. Show that f is continuous at all x ∈ R.

6. Let f : R → R be a continuous function such that f (x) = f (x2 ) for all x ∈ R. Show that
function f is constant.

7. *Let f : [0, ∞) → R be a continuous function and limx→∞ f (x) exists. Show that function f
is bounded on [0, ∞).

8. *Show that there exists at least one positive real solution to the equation |x19 + x8 + 20| = 2x24 .

9. Let f : [0, 1] → R be continuous. Show that there exists a c ∈ [0, 1] such that f (c) =
1 1 1 1 1

10. Find values of a and b for which

ax + 2b,

 x≤0
f (x) = x2 + 3a − b, 0<x≤2

3x − 5,

x>2

f (x) is continuous at every x.

11. Find points of discontinuity of function f defined by

sin2 (n!πx)

f (x) = lim lim .
