Homework+6

The document outlines Homework 6, which includes three main problems related to chemical reactions and process calculations. The first problem involves calculating product flow rates and reactor efficiency for acetylene production from methane. The second problem focuses on neutralizing sodium hydroxide with sulfuric acid and estimating solution volume and temperature, while the third requires writing Matlab codes to solve a differential equation related to a chemical reaction in a tank.

Homework 6, due date: 22 Apr, 11:59pm.

1. Acetylene is produced from methane in the reaction:

2𝐶𝐶𝐻𝐻4 (𝑔𝑔) → 𝐶𝐶2 𝐻𝐻2 (𝑔𝑔) + 3𝐻𝐻2 (𝑔𝑔)

where an undesired side reaction is the decomposition of acetylene:

𝐶𝐶2 𝐻𝐻2 (𝑔𝑔) → 2𝐶𝐶(𝑠𝑠) + 𝐻𝐻2 (𝑔𝑔)

Given that methane is fed to the reactor at 1300℃ at a rate of 10 mol CH4/s. Heat is
transferred to the reactor at a rate of 1400 kW. The product temperature is 1500℃ and the
factional conversion of methane is 0.7.

(a) Using the heat capacities given below, solve the material balance and energy balance to
determine the product component flow rates and the yield of acetylene (i.e. mole acetylene
produced per mol of acetylene that should have been produced if all methane is consumed for
the product).
𝐶𝐶𝑝𝑝,𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶4(𝑔𝑔) ≈ 0.079 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘⁄𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 ∙ ℃
𝐶𝐶𝑝𝑝,𝐶𝐶2𝐶𝐶2(𝑔𝑔) ≈ 0.052 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘⁄𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 ∙ ℃
𝐶𝐶𝑝𝑝,𝐶𝐶2(𝑔𝑔) ≈ 0.031 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘⁄𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 ∙ ℃
𝐶𝐶𝑝𝑝,𝐶𝐶(𝑠𝑠) ≈ 0.022 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘⁄𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 ∙ ℃

(b) The reactor efficiency may be defined as the ratio “actual acetylene yield”/“acetylene
yield without side reaction”. What is the reactor efficiency for this process? (40 marks)

2. A 10.0-molar solution of sodium hydroxide (density: 1.33 g/ml) is neutralized with 75.0
mL of a 4.0 molar solution of sulfuric acid (density: 1.23 g/ml) in a well-insulated container.
Estimate the volume of the sodium hydroxide solution and the final solution temperature if
both feed solutions are at 25 °C.

The heat capacity of the product solution may be taken to be that of pure liquid water, the
standard heat of solution of sodium sulfate is –1.17 kJ/mol, and the energy balance reduces to
0 for this constant-pressure batch process. (30 marks)

3. Write the Matlab codes based on ODE45 to solve Example 5 of the lecture in week 12.

An aqueous solution containing 0.015 mol/L of species A is fed into a holding tank that
initially contains 75 L of pure water. The reactant decomposes at a rate

A
r[mol ] = 0.0375CA
L∙s

where CA (mol A/L) is the concentration of A in the tank. The volumetric feed rate of the
solution, V̇ (t), increases linearly over a 10-second period from 0 to 25 L/s and stays constant
at that rate thereafter until the tank is filled to the desired level. The density of the feed stream
and the tank content is constant.
Based on the equations to differential equations for V(t) (volume of the tank contents) and
CA (t) (concentration of A in the tank), and the initial conditions obtained in the lecture, write
the Matlab codes to solve the equation; plot V and CA versus time. (30 marks)
