Environment

The document discusses the environment, dividing it into natural and biophysical components, and highlights the issue of water pollution caused by human activities. Water pollution has severe impacts on human health, leading to millions of deaths and illnesses, particularly in low-income communities, while also contributing to environmental issues like ocean acidification. Suggested solutions include reducing chemical use, proper waste disposal, water conservation, and community clean-up efforts.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?

The environment is divided into two types of
environment: natural and biophysical environment.
[Link] environment
Encompasses all living and non-living things
occurring naturally.
Encompasses the interaction of all living species,
climate, weather and natural resources that affect
human survival and economic activity.
1.2. Biophysical environment
Includes living things (bio), such as plants and
animals, and non-living things (physical), such as
rocks, soils and water.
Is made up of four parts: the atmosphere,
hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere.
Water pollution
What is the word “pollution” mean?
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into
the natural environment that cause adverse
change. Pollution can take the form of any
substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy (such as
radioactivity, heat, sound, or light).
Although environmental pollution can be caused
by natural events, the word pollution generally
implies that the contaminants have an
anthropogenic source – that is, a source created by
human activities, such as manufacturing,
extractive industries, poor waste management,
transportation or agriculture.
There are a lot of types of pollution, but we will
discuss about water pollution.
2.1. What is water pollution?
Water pollution is the phenomenon in which water
areas such as rivers, lakes, seas, underground
water... are contaminated by activities of the
natural environment and humans with toxic
substances such as substances contained in
pesticides, pesticides, etc. Untreated industrial
waste can all be harmful to humans and living
creatures in nature.
2.2. How water pollution affect the world
ON HUMAN HEALTH
Water pollution caused 1.8 million deaths in 2015,
according to a study published in The Lancet.
Contaminated water can also make you ill. Every
year, unsafe water sickens about 1 billion people.
And low-income communities are
disproportionately at risk because their homes are
often closest to the most polluting industries.
ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Ocean acidification is the decrease of pH of water
surfaces due to the absorption of carbon emissions.
Actually, seas absorb as much as a quarter of all
man-made carbon emissions and the problem is
rapidly worsening. It’s estimated that by the end of
this century, if we keep pace with our current
emissions practices, the surface waters of the ocean
could be nearly 150 percent more acidic than they

cholera, skin diseases, and more dangerously, it will

affects our health, longevity and productivity.
Solutions
Use fewer chemicals to clean your home.
Dispose of waste properly.
Conserve as much water as possible.
Avoid using plastic.
Contain and compost yard waste.
Help clean up litter in water-filled areas.
