Circumference of a Circle

Grade 7 Mathematics

Name: Date:

What is Circumference?
The circumference is the distance around a circle (the perimeter of a circle).
Important parts of a circle:

• Radius (r): Distance from center to edge

• Diameter (d): Distance across the circle through center

• Relationship: d = 2r or r = d

Circumference (C)

radius (r)

Center(d)
diameter

Formulas for Circumference

C = πd (using diameter)
C = 2πr (using radius)
Where π ≈ 3.14 or use π on your calculator
Note: Both formulas give the same answer!

1
Example Problem

Find the circumference of a circle with radius 5 cm. (Use π = 3.14)

Solution:
C = 2πr
C = 2 × 3.14 × 5
C = 31.4 cm

2
Part A: Finding Circumference (Given Radius)
For questions 1–4, find the circumference. Use π = 3.14

Question 1

Question 2

r = 12 cm

C = 2πr =

Question 3
A circular garden has a radius of 8 meters.

Circumference = m

Question 4
A bicycle wheel has a radius of 35 cm.

Circumference = cm

3
Part B: Finding Circumference (Given Diameter)
For questions 5–8, find the circumference. Use π = 3.14

Question 5

d = 10 cm

C = πd =

Question 6

d = 20 cm

C = πd =

Question 7
A circular pizza has a diameter of 14 inches.

Circumference = inches

Question 8
A circular swimming pool has a diameter of 6 meters.

Circumference = m

4
Part C: Mixed Practice
Choose the correct formula based on what is given!

Question 9

9 cm

Is this the radius or diameter?

Formula to use:
Circumference =

Question 10

Circumference = cm

Question 11
A circular running track has a radius of 50 meters. How far do you run if you complete one
lap?

Distance = m

Question 12
The diameter of a coin is 2.4 cm. What is its circumference?

Circumference = cm

Part D: Finding Radius or Diameter from Circumference
Rearranging the formulas:

• If C = πd, then d = C
π

• If C = 2πr, then r = C

Question 13

Question 15
The circumference of a car tire is 188.4 cm. What is the diameter of the tire?

Diameter = cm

Part E: Word Problems

Question 16
A circular fountain has a radius of 4 meters. A decorative fence is placed around it. How much
fencing is needed? (Use π = 3.14)

Fountain
4m

Length of fencing needed = m

Question 17
A wheel makes 100 complete rotations and travels 628 meters. What is the diameter of the
wheel? (Use π = 3.14)
Hint: Distance per rotation = Circumference

Distance per rotation = m

edge. How long should the ribbon be? Add 10 cm extra for overlap.

Circumference = m
Total ribbon needed = m

Part F: Challenge Problems
Question 19
Two circles are drawn. The larger circle has a radius of 10 cm, and the smaller circle has a
radius of 6 cm. What is the difference between their circumferences?

r = 10 cm r = 6 cm

Larger circumference = cm
Smaller circumference = cm
Difference = cm

Question 20
A circular path has an inner radius of 20 meters and an outer radius of 22 meters. If you walk
along the outer edge, how much farther do you walk compared to the inner edge?

22 m

20 m

Extra distance = m

Key Points to Remember:

• Circumference = distance around a circle

• Use C = πd when you know the diameter

• Use C = 2πr when you know the radius

• Remember: diameter = 2 × radius

• π ≈ 3.14 (or use the π button on your calculator)

• Always include units in your answer!
