Tutorial 4 (Transformers)
1. A 100 kVA 8 kV/ 275 V distribution transformer has the following resistance and reactance
parameters:
R1 = 5.0 Ω X1 = j6.0 Ω
R2’ = 4.18 Ω X2’ = j5.0 Ω
RC = 50 kΩ XM = j10 kΩ
(i) Draw the Approximate Equivalent Circuit referred to the Primary
(ii) Assuming the transformer is supplying rated load at rated voltage with a
Power Factor of 0.85 lagging, calculate the transformer input voltage V1;
(iii) Calculate the transformer Copper and Core losses;
(iv) Calculate the transformer efficiency.

2. A 100 kVA single phase transformer steps up the voltage from 440 V to 3300 V has the
following name plate data:
RATING 100 kVA
FREQUENCY 50 Hz
PHASES 1
PRIMARY VOLTAGE 440 V
SECONDARY VOLTAGE 3300 V
INSULATION Class H
Test results from an open circuit and short circuit tests gave the following results:
OPEN CIRCUIT TEST
(Performed on secondary with primary open circuited)
VOC = 3300 V
IOC = 2.26 A
POC = 800 W
SHORT CIRCUIT TEST
(performed on primary with secondary short circuited)
VSC = 20.7 V
ISC = 227 A
PSC = 2000 W
From these test results determine:
(i) the approximate equivalent circuit parameters referred to the primary;
(ii) on the approximate equivalent circuit include all parameter values;
(iii) the efficiency when V2 = 3300V with a load impedance ZL = 87.1 + j65.3Ω;
(iv) the voltage regulation with the above load impedance.
