Tutorial 3 (Magnetics)
1. A transformer has a hysteresis loss of 300 W when the maximum core flux density is 0.9 T
and the frequency is 50 Hz. Calculate the hysteresis loss if the maximum flux density is
increased to 1.1 T and the frequency of operation is reduced to 40 Hz. Assume the
hysteresis loss over this range to be proportional to BMAX1.7.

2. A mild steel ring with a mean diameter of 175 mm and a uniform cross section of
20 mm x 15 mm is wound with a coil of 500 turns. Using the B/H curves provided:
(i) determine the coil current to produce a flux of 375µWb in the ring
(ii) if an airgap of 1.5 mm is now cut into the ring, calculate the coil current to produce
the same flux of 375µWb in the airgap

3. A magnetic circuit has dimensions = = 9 , = 30 cm, g = 0.05 cm,
and N = 500. Assume = 70, 000 for core material. For the condition that the magnetic
circuit is operating with = 1.0 T.
(i) Find the reluctances and
(ii) Calculate current
(iii) Inductance
(iv) The magnetic stored energy
(v) The induced voltage for a 60 - Hz time-varying core flux of the form
