INSTRUCTIONS: -
1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer all questions in sections A and B and any two (2) questions from section C.
3. Non-programmable calculators may be used.
4. Cellular phones and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination room.
5. When necessary use
(i) Acceleration due to gravity, g = 10 m/s2 or 10 N/kg
(ii) Density of mercury=13.6g/𝑐𝑚3 or 136000kg/𝑚3
(iii) Specific heat capacity of ice = 2.1  10 3 Jkg −1 K −1
(iv) Specific heat capacity of water = 4.2  10 3 Jkg −1 K −1
(v) Specific Latent heat of fusion of water = 3.4  10 5 Jkg −1
(vi) Pi, 𝜋 = 3.14
SECTION A (16 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section.

3. (a) Briefly explain why letters on the front of an ambulance are written laterally inverted as .
(4 marks)
(b) A compound microscope consists of two lenses of focal length 12 cm and 6 cm for the objective lens and
the eyepiece lens respectively. The two lenses are separated by a distance of 30 cm. The microscope is then
focused to a point where the image is formed at infinity. Use lens formula to determine the position of the
object. (5 marks)
4. (a) A pulley system machine is used to lift a body of weight 400N when an effort of 100N is applied. If the
efficiency of this machine is 80%, draw a sketched diagram of this machine (5 marks)
(b) Uniform metal beam of length 5 m and mass 9 kg is suspended horizontally by two wires attached at
50cm from the left end of the beam and 150 cm from the right end of the beam. Furthermore, loads of
60N and 150 N are placed at the quarter and three-quarter length of the beam respectively, from the left
end. Determine the tension in each wire? (4 marks)

5. (a) When a uniform hydrometer is floated in a liquid of density 0.80 g/cm , 17 cm part long of the
hydrometer is submerged in a liquid. What length of the hydrometer will be submerged if it is
floated in another liquid of density 0.85 g/cm3? (4 marks)
(b) Two airplanes A and B are moving with speeds 60 m/s and 60 m/s due east and due north
respectively. If wind is blowing at 15 m/s due west, what is the velocity of airplane A with respect to
that of B as observed by a stationary observer on the ground. (5 marks)
6. (a) Briefly explain how would the dimensions of a newly constructed Tanzania standard gauge rail line
change during the summer and winter seasons? (4 marks)

(b) Determine the amount of thermal energy required to change 1kg of ice at -10 C to water at room

temperature 25 C. (5 marks)
7. (a) Is it possible for two cells in parallel arrangement to drive more current through a resistor than one cell?
Give reason. (4 marks)
(b) Figure 1, shows four electric bulbs labeled A, B, C and D which are identical. Explain what will happen
to the bulbs A, B and D when bulb C blows off and the switch is closed. (5 marks)

8. (a) Satellite are usefully in our daily life. Give two importance of earth’s satellite. (4 marks)

(b) A sample of carbon isotope C6 has a half-life of 5700 years. What fraction of 14
C6 will remain
after 17100 years? (5 marks)

SECTION C (30 Marks)


Answer any two (2) questions from this section.

9. (a) A pendulum clock loses 12s a day if the temperature is 400C and gains 4s a day if the temperature is
200C. If the thread used to make the pendulum is made of metal, find the temperature of a day
at which the clock will show correct time. (5 marks)

(b) You are provided with spring balance, a mass, two beakers one filled with water and another one
filled with liquid X. Briefly explain how will you determine the relative density of liquid X.
(6 marks)
(c) Science students design a liquid bulb thermometer which is not more accurate and less sensitive.
Give two suggestions of changes that can make improvement. (4 marks)

10. (a) You are provided with two materials of the same looking, one is conductor and the other in
semiconductor. Give two experiments in which you can distinguish between them. (4 marks)

(b) With the aid of a diagram, explain how a full wave rectifier operates using only two diodes.
(6 marks)
(c) A string is set vibrating by plucking at a point one-quarter of the length from the end. Derive the
expression of the frequency note produced by the vibrating string. (5 marks))

11. a) Answer the question bellow


i. Faraday’s law and Lenz’s law are precise laws dealing with induced e.m.f. how do they differ when
there is magnetic flux linking the coil concerned? (2 marks )
ii. The result of the Faradays experiments were that the magnitude of the induced e.m.f were related to
which factors? Explain in short four factors. (4 marks )

b) An ideal transformer should have an efficiency of 100%. Yet in any practical transformers there are power
losses which do not allow 100%. Explain five of those factors. (5 marks )

c) A step-up transformer has 10,000turns in the secondary coil and 100 turns in the primary coil. A current of
5.0A flows in the primary circuit when connected to a 12.0V supply

i. Calculate the voltage across the secondary coil ( 2 marks )


ii. If the transformer has an efficiency of 09% what is the current in the secondary coil.(2 marks )
