Project+Assignment

The EENG 5420 course project aims to design a dual-band antenna for WiFi applications, targeting frequency ranges of 2.4-2.5 GHz and 5.1-5.9 GHz with specific performance criteria such as |S11| ≤ -10 dB, linear polarization, and a minimum gain of 6.0 dBi. The final report should include sections on the introduction, approach, antenna design, simulation results, and conclusion, emphasizing the design process and results achieved. Proper formatting and presentation of the report are crucial, accounting for 60% of the project score, while technical content contributes 40%.

EENG 5420 – Antenna Theory and Design – Spring 2025

Course Project
The goal of this project is to design a dual-band antenna for WiFi applications. Please follow the
guideline below for your design project and for preparing the final report.
I- Technical Objective:
The objective is to design an antenna that meets the following specifications:
1. Frequency ranges of operation: the antenna has two operating bands of 2.4-2.5 GHz
(lower band) and 5.1-5.9 GHz (higher band).
2. |𝑆𝑆11 | ≤ −10 dB (with a reference impedance of 50 Ω) over the entire frequency bands.
3. Polarization: linear polarization (either vertical or horizontal polarization).
4. Gain: at least 6.0 dBi over the entire band.
5. Maximum physical dimensions: 100 mm × 100 mm × 50 mm.
Note: Even if you cannot find a design solution that meets or exceeds all of the required
specifications above, please do your best to meet as many requirements as possible.
II- Suggested Structure for the Final Report:
In design problem, you will go through several steps from identifying potential design
solutions to evaluating and fine tuning the design using full-wave simulations to arrive at the
final antenna structure that can meet as many required specifications as possible. When you
put together the final report, please make sure to cover the following sections.
1) Introduction:
Briefly present the problem that you are trying to solve in this project, summarize your
approach to solve the problem (e.g., which technique you use to achieve the dual-band
operation), and highlight the significant results you achieved at the end of the project.
2) Approach:
From the technical objectives specified above, you will need to find a suitable antenna
structure that can help you meet (or exceed) the required specifications. Note that you
would need to satisfy the requirement that |S11 | ≤ −10 dB over the entire lower and
upper frequency ranges of 2.4-2.5 GHz and 5.1-5.9 GHz (not just at a single frequency).
Here, doing literature research to find a suitable solution and apply it to satisfy the
bandwidth, polarization, and gain requirements within the given physical dimensions
would be the best way.
3) Antenna Design:
After identifying the best solution for your antenna design, you will discuss the key details
of the proposed design in this section. You should include a drawing for the antenna
topology that you use. Also discuss what mechanism in this antenna design helps you
achieve the dual-band operation, linear polarization, and impedance matching over both
frequency bands. Your discussion should include details on the feeding line/structure
used for the antenna.
4) Simulation Results:
In this section, you can present the full-wave simulation results showing the performance
of the antenna. Please make sure to include the followings in your report:
(i) A screen shot showing the antenna model that you created in Ansys Electronic
Desktop or CST Studio.
(ii) A graph showing |𝑆𝑆11 | as a function of frequency over the range from 1 to 7 GHz
to highlight the -10 dB impedance matching bandwidths.
(iii) A graph showing the 3D radiation pattern of the antenna at the center of the lower
and upper bands, e.g., at 2.45 GHz and 5.5 GHz.
(iv) A graph showing the peak realized gain as the function of frequency from 2-6 GHz.
(v) A discussion on what you observe from the simulation results. Discuss the
followings:
• The bandwidths that you achieve for your design.
• The polarization that your antenna provides

5) Conclusion:
Conclude your report with your thoughts, comments, and key observation about the
antenna design that you came up with. Does it meet the technical specifications? Which
part of the required specifications is most difficult to fulfill (bandwidths, dual-band
operation, or gain)? Is there any potential solution for improving the specifications that
you are not able to match at the end of the project? What are the important lessons
that you learnt through the project?
III- Format of the Report:
1) Your report must be typed in a word processing software such as LaTeX or MS Word.
2) Use font size 12 for the text.
3) Figures should have legible text in the axis titles and labels, legends, markers. If you want
to get higher score, you can export data from Ansys Electronics Desktop or CST Studio and
use Matlab or Origin to create professionally looking graphs. You can see published
papers on the IEEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation to get a better idea of
how the figures should look like.
4) Put serious effort on the format and preparation of the report as this accounts for 60% of
your project score (regardless of your technical content). Try to make a well written report
with clear presentation, no grammatical errors, visible and clear images, legible and
professionally prepared figures. Technical content accounts for the other 40% of your
project score.
