Project Report

The project focuses on creating an automated water collection and watering system using Arduino technology to assist farmers in areas with limited rainfall. It aims to optimize water usage and improve crop health by automatically watering plants based on soil moisture levels, thereby increasing crop yields and food security. The system is designed to be low-cost and efficient, reducing the need for manual labor and ensuring consistent hydration for plants.

AN AUTOMATED WATER COLLECTION AND WATERING ARDUINO SYSTEM PROJECT

BY SSEKAMWA JOSHUA OF SENIOR FOUR _____ AT UGANDA MARTYRS

SECONDARY SCHOOL NAMUGONGO.

DECLARATION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I hereby affirm and declare that this project is a true record of my work and has not been
submitted elsewhere for assessment.
I would like to thank my fellow group members and parents for the cooperation and help
provided in the making of this project through resource collection and motivation that
enabled it to finish hi in time.

Summary
This project aims to ensure adequate water presence in people's homesteads and farms.
However it is mainly addressed to the farmers who practice crop cultivation on large scale
mostly in areas with little rainfall in order to help them store adequate water for irrigation that
can promote proper crop growth as well as water their crops in their absence. It also aims at
keeping all plants healthy even when unmonitored by any workers. This is done by watering
them when the sensors detect that the moisture levels have dropped below expected. This
project will in turn increase overall crop yields which increases income generation and food
security in the community.

CHAPTER ONE : INTRODUCTION

Conventional manual watering is time-consuming, labor intensive and prone to error, often
resulting in either overwatering or underwatering, which harms plant [Link] is a
growing need to conserve water and optimize usage, especially in areas with limited
resources or in urban [Link] project utilizes Arduino to automate the process,
enabling real-time monitoring of soil moisture, which activates a water pump only when
[Link] primary goals are to create a low-cost, easy-to-use, and efficient system that
reduces human intervention and improves plant health. This project can be applied in urban
agriculture and household pot plants as well as remote farming by the use of solar power
and in smart garden management systems.

CHAPTER TWO : LITERATURE REVIEW

Studies from different regions as displayed in various newspapers such as the new vision
and bukedde newspaper depict farmers crying because of their plants drying up because of
reasons such as some forgetting to water them on several days and some lacking water to
water the plants. A study from the Westnile region shows a large plantation taken down due
to lack of water for the crops. One of my group members also interacted with a neighboring
farmer who expressed his need for an automated watering system for when he isn't around
to monitor his farm and need to reduce labor costs because of the current poor economy in
the [Link] this automatic plant watering device was invented by William B.
Crane in 1973, which was tested and approved in July of that year.

CHAPTER THREE : METHODOLOGY

In the first week of the plan we had to all first contribute money to facilitate the buying of all
the necessary equipment for making the project and each member had to send shs 65000 to
the group leader . The process of collection was delayed a bit because some members were
offline in that period but we were able to complete it smoothly and in time. In total we
managed to collect a total of shs 455000 from the seven group members. This money was
used to buy the following materials, Arduino kit, water pump, tank, cardboard, paint among
others. We had trouble with finding small gutters to fit on the house of the project so we
improvised by using some cuttings from bottles in the [Link] uses of the items are
explained as seen below;
Arduino uno / microcontroller: Acts as the brain, processing data from the sensor and
controlling the pump.
Soil moisture sensor:Measures the electrical resistance/capacitance in the soil to determine
if it is dry or wet.
Water pump:Delivers water from the tank to the plants.
Battery(12V):Powers the Arduino and the pump.
Tubes : Transport water from the tank to the soil.
Tank:Container holding the water to be used by the pump.
Motor Driver (L293D/L298N): Controls the pump speed and direction.
LEDs & Buzzer: Visual or audio indicators for dry soil or low water levels.
Computer: was used to program the functioning of the Arduino and set the level at which the
soil moisture is regarded low so as to send orders to the pump to release the water to plants.
House/ Shelter: To act as a storage for the Arduino setting.

System design of the project

The automated plant watering system designed using Arduino consists of a soil moisture
sensor to monitor soil dryness, triggering a 9V relay module to activate a water pump when
moisture levels drop below a set threshold. The system is a 9V supply which automatically
irrigates the plant, ensuring consistent hydration. The water supplied to the plants is stored
in a water tank or reservoir that is connected to a pump to supply the optimal water needed
the the plant at the moment. We collected some information on the project from a website
called [Link] .
