Vectors 03

Concepts Covered in the Class:

• Result ant of Two Equal Vectors
• Range of Result ant Vector
• Vector Addition an d Subtr acti on
• Unit Vector
• Position and Re lati ve Position Vector
• Magnitude of a Vect or
• Equati ons of Moti on in Vector Form

Resultant of Two Equal Vectors

• For two vectors with eq ual magnitu de 'x', the
magnitude of th e r esult ant 'R' is gi ven b y R = 2x
cos( θ/2).
• The result ant vect or b isects the angle betwe en the
two origin al vectors.

[1]
• Key results : If θ=60°, R=x√3; if θ=90°, R=x√2; if
θ=120°, R=x.

Range of Resultant Vector

• The resultant `C ` of two ve ctors `A` and `B` has a
magnitude within a speci fic r ange.
• The maximu m magnit ude is `C_max = A + B`.
• The minimum magnitu de is `C _min = |A - B|`.

Subtraction of Vectors
• Subtracting a vector is t he same as adding its
negative vector: `D = A - B = A + ( -B)`.
• The magnitu de of the diff ere nce is `D = sqrt(A 2 + B 2
- 2ABcos θ)`.

Addition of two vector
• The magnitu de of th e r esultant vect or `C` is `C =
sqrt(A 2 + B 2 + 2ABcos θ)`.
• The dir ection ` α` of the resultant with vector A is
given by `tan α = Bsin θ / (A + Bcos θ)`.

Subtraction of two vector

• The magnitude of the dif fer ence vector `D ` is `D =
sqrt(A 2 + B 2 - 2ABcos θ)`.
• The dir ection ` α` of the dif ference w ith vector A is
given by `tan α = Bsin θ / (A - Bcos θ)`.

काम का डब्बा
• The resu ltant is maximum when vectors are in th e
same di rection (` θ=0°`), `R_ max = A + B`.
• The resu ltant is minimum when vectors ar e in
opposite directi ons (` θ=180°`) , `R_min = |A - B|`.
• For tw o equ al vectors, if ` θ=60°`, `R =A√3`; i f ` θ=90°`,
`R=A√2`; if `θ=120°`, `R=A`.

Unit Vector (Â)
• A vector with a magnitu de of 1, used to indicat e
directi on.
• A vector can be expressed as the product of its
magnitude and its unit vector : Vector A = |A|Â.
• A unit vector is found b y dividing the vector b y its
magnitude: Â = A / |A|.

Position Vector
• The position vector (P.V.) specifies a point's locat ion
in space with respect to the origin. For a point A(x,
y, z), its P.V. is r = xi + y j + zk.

• The position vect or of p oint B with respect to p oint A
is r_B/A = r_B - r_A = (x2 - x1)i + (y2 - y1)j +
(z2 - z1)k.

Magnitude of a Vector
• The magnitu de of a vector re presents its length.
• For a vect or A = Axî + A y ĵ + Az k̂ , its magnit ude is
|A| = √(Ax² + Ay² + Az²).

Equations of Motion in Vector Form

• Newton's Second Law in vect or form is F = ma.
• The first equ ati on of mot ion in vector f orm is v = u
+ at.
• The second equ ation of moti on in vector form is r =
ut + (1/2)at².
