Introduction
Computer networking concerns the connection of computers and other devices so that they can
exchange information and share resources. Networks support communication, cloud services,
websites, online learning, business systems, and digital activities.
Network Types
Networks can be categorized by scale and purpose. A local area network connects devices within
a limited area, while wider networks connect devices across larger regions. Personal,
metropolitan, and wide area networks are common classifications.
Network Topologies
A topology describes how devices and connections are arranged. Star, bus, ring, mesh, and hybrid
topologies have different implications for reliability, cost, maintenance, and performance.
Network Devices
Switches connect devices within a local network, routers connect different networks, access
points provide wireless connectivity, and modems can connect local equipment to an internet
service.
Protocols and IP Addressing
Protocols are agreed rules for communication between systems. IP addresses identify devices or
interfaces for network communication. IPv4 uses a 32-bit addressing system, while IPv6 provides
a much larger address space.
DNS and Data Transmission
The Domain Name System translates human-readable domain names into information used to
locate network services. Data can travel through Ethernet, fibre-optic, Wi-Fi, and cellular
systems. Bandwidth, latency, interference, distance, and reliability affect performance.
Network Security
Network security protects systems and information from unauthorized access, disruption,
alteration, and misuse. Important practices include authentication, access control, software
updates, encryption, monitoring, backups, and security awareness.
Troubleshooting
Network troubleshooting involves identifying symptoms, checking physical connections,
examining configurations, testing connectivity, and narrowing down possible causes. A
systematic process is generally more effective than changing many settings at once.
Key Terms

Review Questions
What is a computer network? Compare LAN and WAN. What is a topology? What does a router
do? What are protocols? Why are IP addresses important? What is DNS? Name factors affecting
network performance. Why is network security important?
