Altitude Measuring Instruments During Takeoff and

Landing
Presentation Script
Introduction
Today, I am going to present our research on the existing technologies used to measure aircraft
altitude and vertical distance during takeoff and landing, along with their limitations and how these
limitations create an opportunity for our project.

Altitude measurement is one of the most important aspects of aviation. During normal flight, pilots
need to know the aircraft's altitude above mean sea level for navigation. During takeoff, landing,
and low-altitude operations, the aircraft must know its exact height above the ground (Above
Ground Level - AGL). Different technologies are used for this purpose, each having advantages
and limitations.

1. Barometric Altimeter
Measures atmospheric pressure using an aneroid capsule. As pressure decreases with altitude, the
capsule expands and the mechanism converts this movement into an altitude indication.

Advantages:
• Simple and reliable
• Low cost
• No external sensors required
• Suitable for cruise flight

Limitations:
• Affected by weather and temperature
• Requires correct pressure setting
• Measures altitude above mean sea level, not actual ground clearance.

2. Radio Altimeter
Transmits radio waves toward the ground and measures the return time of the reflected signal to
calculate height above ground.

Formula: Height = (Speed of Light × Time) / 2

Advantages:
• Very high accuracy
• Measures true ground clearance
• Used during landing, takeoff, autoland, and terrain warning systems.

Limitations:
• Expensive
• Heavy
• Higher power consumption
• Effective mainly below about 2500 ft AGL.

3. GPS Altitude
Uses signals from multiple satellites to determine aircraft position and altitude through trilateration.
Advantages:
• Worldwide coverage
• Lightweight
• Easy integration

Limitations:
• Lower vertical accuracy
• Signal blockage and multipath errors
• Not accurate enough for precision landing.

4. LiDAR Altimeter
Uses laser pulses and time-of-flight measurement to determine distance from the ground.

Advantages:
• Extremely accurate
• Fast response
• High resolution

Limitations:
• Expensive
• Affected by fog, rain, dust, and smoke
• Higher power consumption.

5. Ultrasonic Sensor
Uses ultrasonic sound waves and echo time to measure distance.

Advantages:
• Very low cost
• Easy integration
• Low power

Limitations:
• Limited range (2–5 m)
• Affected by wind and temperature
• Less reliable on soft or uneven surfaces.

Comparison
Barometric: Medium accuracy, Low cost, Best for cruise flight.
Radio Altimeter: Very High accuracy, High cost, Best for landing and takeoff.
GPS: Medium accuracy, Medium cost, Best for navigation.
LiDAR: Very High accuracy, High cost, Best for UAVs and autonomous systems.
Ultrasonic: Good accuracy, Very Low cost, Best for small drones.

Research Gap
Existing systems all have drawbacks. Barometric altimeters cannot measure true ground clearance.
Radio altimeters are accurate but expensive and heavy. GPS lacks precision for landing. LiDAR is
accurate but costly and weather-sensitive. Ultrasonic sensors have limited range. There is a need
for a lightweight, low-cost, energy-efficient, and accurate system for UAV precision landing.

Our Project
Our project aims to develop a lightweight, low-cost vertical distance measurement system that
provides accurate real-time height information during takeoff and landing.

Objectives:
• Improve landing accuracy
• Reduce cost
• Minimize weight
• Lower power consumption
• Easy UAV integration
• Reliable real-time measurements.

Conclusion
Existing altitude measurement technologies are effective but limited by cost, weight, environmental
sensitivity, accuracy, or power consumption. Our project aims to overcome these limitations with a
compact and economical solution for UAV precision landing.

Possible Viva Questions

1. Difference between altitude and vertical distance? Altitude is above mean sea level (MSL), while
vertical distance is height above ground (AGL).
2. Why not use GPS alone? Vertical accuracy is insufficient for precision landing.
3. Why is a radio altimeter expensive? Specialized RF hardware and aviation certification.
4. Why is your system better? Lightweight, low-cost, lower power, and suitable for UAVs.
5. Applications? UAVs, autonomous landing, agriculture, inspection, delivery drones, and robotics.
