PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS and INTERPRETATION of DATA

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of data collected by the

researchers in order to answer the questions of the study.

1. What is the level of interest in Mathematics of Senior High School students?

Table 3 presents the mean Perception of the Senior High School students of their

level of Interest in Mathematics.

 On item number 1, the respondents indicated moderate level of interest as

evidenced by the mean of 2.54. This result implies that the Senior High School students

are interested in fractions to just a normal level. This is what Sukhran (2006) noted in his

study. He found out that students are have average level of interest when it comes to

solving problems that involve equations. In addition, fractions are left out whenever there

are discussions in the subject.

NOTE:

On item number 1, the respondents indicated moderate level of interest as

evidenced by the mean of 2.54. INTERPRETATION

This result implies that the Senior High School students are interested in

fractions to just a normal level. IMPLICATION

This is what Sukhran (2006) noted in his study. He found out that students are

have average level of interest when it comes to solving problems that involve

equations. In addition, fractions are left out whenever there are discussions in the

subject. PROOF

The respondents exhibited a moderate extent of interest in Mathematics of

performance as shown by the overall mean of 3.02. This implies that the students have

average interest in the subject as a whole. This can be explained by the study of Smith

(2001) that revealed students seem to be less interested in the subject. He noted that the

mediocre level of interest in the subject is alarming.

 2. What is the academic performance of Senior High School students?

Table 4 shows the frequency and percentage distribution of the academic

performance of Senior High School students. The mean of 85.57 indicated that Math

Majors have an average performance in dealing with word problems.

Six students out of 50 or 8 % had very low performance. However, 11 or 22% or

from the population of 41 performed at a low level. Twelve students or 24% of the entire

population had an average performance. In spite of this, 34% of the whole population

which is composed of 17 SHS students had superior performance. Only four students or

8% of the respondents exhibited excellent performance.

The overall mean of 85.57 reveals that generally, SHS students only got an average

performance on the first quarter of the school year. It is possible that the result was

affected by the level of interest as reasoned earlier. They are more interested in other
subjects than in dealing with numerical tasks. Corona (2008) proves this case in her study

on students with difficulty in Mathematics. She noted that whenever the students face Math

problems, they immediately dislike them.

It is possible that the result was affected by the level of interest as reasoned

earlier. They are more interested in other subjects than in dealing with numerical

 As revealed in the correlation table between level of interest in Mathematics and

academic performance, there is a high relationship between the two variables.

The degree of relationship indicates that the level of interest in Mathematics is

highly related to the achievement in Mathematics of SHS students. The result agrees with

the findings of Osterholm (2007) where he concluded that the level of interest in any

subject can predict the performance of the students.

NOTE:

As revealed in the correlation table between level of interest in Mathematics

and academic performance, there is a high relationship between the two variables.

INTERPRETATION

The degree of relationship indicates that the level of interest in Mathematics

is highly related to the achievement in Mathematics of SHS students. IMPLICATION

 CHAPTER V

SUMMARY of FINDINGS, CONCLUSION and RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and

recommendations the researchers propose after having come up with their analysis.

Summary of findings

Results of the analysis indicate the following findings:

1. Senior High School students had moderate interest in Mathematics as

indicated by the overall mean of 3.02.

2. Senior High School students had average performance on the first quarter of

the school year as revealed by the mean grade of 85.57.

3. Since the computed r-value is 0.688, it is evident that there was a high

relationship between the level of interest in Mathematics and academic performance of

Senior High School. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected.

Conclusions

Based on the foregoing findings, the researchers came up with the following

conclusions:

1. Senior High School students had moderate interest in Mathematics.

2. Senior High School students performed on an average level on the first

quarter of the school year.

 3. The level of interest in Mathematics is highly related to the academic

performance of SHS students.

Recommendations

After thorough analysis of the results of the study, the researchers came up with

the following recommendations:

1. Senior High School students may allot more time in studying lessons in

Mathematics.

2. It is recommended that the students improve their study habits especially in

subjects that have numerical tasks.

3. The teachers may also try other strategies in teaching Mathematics.

4. Further research is recommended to explore more on how the interest in

Mathematics affects the performance of students.
