Memory

The document provides an overview of memory, detailing its definition, types, and models, particularly the Atkinson-Shiffrin model which includes sensory, short-term, and long-term memory. It emphasizes the importance of lifestyle choices in improving memory and offers methods for enhancing memory retention. Key concepts include the differences in memory storage duration and capacity, as well as techniques for better recall and recognition.

MEMORY
❑ Memory give people to kept ability to earn & adapt
from previous experiences.

Memory has ability to

Encode, Store, Recall Information.

Cognitive Psychologist MARGARET W. MATLIN has

described memory as “the process of retaining
information over time.”
MODELS OF MEMORY
The Atkinson-Shiffrin model of memory, also called the three-box
model, (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968) describes three stages, or
boxes, in the active pro

The three main stores are the sensory memory, short-term

memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM).

Each of the memory stores differs in the way information is

processed (encoding), how much information can be stored
(capacity), for how long (duration).

Information is detected by the sense organs and enters the

sensory memory, which stores a fleeting impression of sensory
stimuli.
TYPES OF MEMORY
Sensory Memory
3 Sensory memory is the brief storage of sensory information.
3 Sensory memory serves the purpose of allowing us to simplify and
interpret incoming stimuli.
3 But unless it is processed, it is quickly forgotten.
3 Sensory memories include iconic memories and brief visual flashes
that humans can only remember for about one-quarter of a second.
3 It also includes echoic memories and auditory bursts of memory
which last around four seconds.
3 This difference explains why many people will read a phone
number aloud while beginning to type it into their phone; four
seconds can be enough to finish remembering a long string of digits.
SHORT-TERM MEMORY
• Short-term memory allows a person to recall a limited string
of information for a short period.
• These memories disappear quickly, after about 30 seconds

• Short-term memory is not just memory that does not last
long. Instead, it is a type of short-lived storage that can only
hold a few pieces of information.
❑ Some examples of short-term memory include:
3 remembering a string of 5–7 words and repeating it back.
3 remembering a phone number while getting a pen to jot it
down.
LONG-TERM MEMORY
Long-term memory (LTM) is the stage of
the Atkinson–Shiffrin memory model in
which informative knowledge is held
indefinitely. It is defined in contrast to
short-term and working memory, which
persist for only about 18 to 30 seconds.
LTM is commonly labelled as "explicit
memory" (declarative memory), as well as
"episodic memory," "semantic memory,"
"autobiographical memory," and "implicit
memory" (procedural memory).
IMPROVING MEMORY
IMPROVING MEMORY
❏ The best way to protect & improve
memory is by making good lifestyle
choices:-
Exercising regularly, Limiting stress,
Eating healthfully ,& getting enough
sleep.

Paying closer attention to details in

the moment can make it easier to
remember them later.

People can learn to focus better;

mindfulness techniques may help.
Methods of Improving Memory:-

Forgetting things? Do you improve your memory without any medication.

Improving your memory is easier by following below tips:-
