Exercise 1:
Man: Good morning. Central School of Music.
Judy: Good morning. My name’s Judy Black. I’d like some information about guitar
lessons, please.
Man: Are you beginner?
Judy: Yes, I’ve never played the guitar before.
Man: Then you’ll want a beginners’ class. There is one on Wednesday evening and
another on Tuesday morning.
Judy: I work during the day so I’d like the evening class.
Man: It begins at half past seven and it’s a two-hour class.
Judy: Oh. That will be fine for me. Er, can you tell me how much I have to pay?
Man: Each lesson costs five pounds fifty. That’s fifty-five pounds for a course of ten
lessons.
Judy: That’s not bad. But I haven’t got a guitar. Does it matter?
Man: No, the school can lend you one.
Judy: Oh good. And can you tell me the name of the teacher?
Man: It’s Mrs Capelle. That’s C-A-P-E-L-L-E.
Judy: Right. What room will my lesson be in?
Man: Classroom number three hundred and twenty eight on the third floor.
Judy: Great. Thank you very much. Bye.
Man: Bye.

Exercise 2:
Friend: Hello, Grace, did you have a nice time at the Rosemount Hotel?
Grace: You mean the Rosebank, yes, I enjoyed it.
Friend: Where was it?
Grace: Five minutes from the mountains, right on the beach. The shops were ten
kilometres away.
Friend: It sounds rather quiet.
Grace: It was, but I liked that.
Friend: Was there a pool?
Grace: Yes, but it was closed. I swam in the sea once but I spent most days on the
hotel golf course. There were tennis courts in the town but they were too far away.
Friend: Did you have a nice room?
Grace: Yes, it was quite big and I could watch television and videos there in the
evening. If I wanted a cup of coffee or cold drink I went to the bar downstairs.
Friend: And how about the meals?
Grace: There were lots of vegetables but the meat and fish were always fried and
often came with chips. I really prefer rice or pasta.
Friend: Me too.
Grace: Anyway, my stay didn’t cost much and it was a nice quiet break away from
my noisy family.

Exercise 3:
Male: Hello
Female: Good morning. Can I help you?
Male: Well, I have to go to Argentina next week, so I’d like some information about
flying to Buenos Aires.
Femal: OK. Well, there are direct flights ... er... on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays.
Male: And what time do they leave?
Female: At 2 p.m. on all three days.
Male: OK.... Wednesday is best for me. Now, how can I get to the airport? Is there a
bus?
Female: Yes. You’ll have to check in at the airport at twelve o’clock, so you could
take the ten o’clock coach from the bus station in Mill Street.
Male: In Mill Street, OK. How long does the coach take?
Female: About one and a half hours.
Male: And how much is a single ticket to Buenos Aires?
Female: Well, a single to Buenos Aires is £300, but if you have a student card there’s
a twenty per cent reduction.
Male: Yes, I’ve got a student card. Here it is.
Female: OK, so the flight will be £240.
Male: Right. And the coach fare?
Female: That’s £13.50
Male: OK. I’ll book it, please.

Exercise 4:
1. Hi, Mom. This is Jill. Just calling to say hello. I am having a wonderful time. Last
week I met this gorgeous Italian guy. He’s really nice. Umm, he doesn’t have a job yet,
but I’m sure he’s going to be very successful and guess what? He wants to marry me.
He gave me a beautiful ring. I think it belonged to a relative. Anyway, what do you
think? I’ll call back later. Bye.
2. Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad. This is Sean. I am having a terrific time but I am not relaxing
much. The weather is great so I’m always busy doing something. Things are really
expensive in Hawaii - the hotels, the clothes, the food, everything – and I’m completely
out of money. So can you send me some money as soon as possible? Thanks. Love
you. Bye.
3. Mom. This is John. Listen. I’m going to be back a day late. Traffic to the airport this
morning was terrible. By the time I arrived, my plane had left. I also lost my wallet in
the rush. It has all my credit cards in it. And the airline won’t help me. I’m not sure
what to do. I’ll call you later. Bye.
4. Oh, Bob. This is Rachel. Sorry I missed your call last night. I went out for dinner
and today I’ve got a terrible stomachache. It must be something I ate. Anyway, I am
going to see the doctor. Don’t worry. I’m sure I’ll be fine . Talk to you soon.
5. Hi, Dad. This is Mary calling from Paris. Sorry I missed you. Listen. Something
terrible happened. I went on a bus tour this morning, and dropped my glasses
somewhere. I can’t find them, and I can’t see anything without them. Can you call me
back as soon as you get this message?

Exercise 5:

Tom Hello, this is Tom Field from Lowis Engineering in London. Can I speak to
Karen Taylor, please?
Kim Oh hello, Mr Field. I’m Karen’s assistant. I’m afraid she’s not in the office
today. She’s on a business trip to Malaysia. Can I help you?
Tom Oh, I see. Well, can you put me through to John Carter?
Kim Of course. Hold the line, please. Hello, Mr. Field? I’m sorry but his line’s busy
at the moment. Can I take a message?
Tom No, don’t worry. I’ll call him back later.
Kim By the way, I know that Karen checks her emails every evening.
Tom Yes. That’s good idea. I’ll send her an email. Thanks for your help.
Kim And she’ll be back in the office on Friday, so you can speak to her then.
Tom Ok. Good to know. Thanks a lot.
