Science QA

The document provides answers to science questions regarding the differences between diffusion and Brownian motion, the characteristics of solid, liquid, and gas states, and the compressibility of gases. It also explains the consequences of temperature changes on a bridge without expansion gaps and how energy transfer affects particle movement and object size. Overall, it emphasizes the behavior of particles in different states of matter and their responses to environmental changes.

Science Questions and Answers

Q1. Differentiate between: (Marks: 2)

1. Diffusion and Brownian motion

- Diffusion: Particles move from higher to lower concentration until evenly spread.
- Brownian motion: Random movement of particles suspended in a fluid caused by collisions.

2. Solid, liquid, and gas

State Shape Volume Particle Arrangement Particle Movement
Solid Fixed Fixed Closely packed Vibrate in place
Liquid No fixed shape (takes Fixed Close together, Move slowly/slide
container shape) can slide past each other
Gas No fixed shape No fixed Far apart Move freely and quickly
volume

Q2. Keeping the particle model in mind, explain which state of matter can be compressed and why:
(Marks: 2)
- Gases can be compressed because their particles are far apart with empty space between them.
- Solids and liquids cannot be easily compressed because their particles are already close together.

Q3. A bridge is built without expansion gaps. Explain what could happen to the bridge if the
temperature became: (Marks: 4)
a) Much hotter: The bridge would expand. Without gaps, this could cause bending, warping, or
cracking.
b) Much colder: The bridge would contract. This could lead to gaps at weak points, cracks, or
structural stress.

Q4. A substance cools down when energy is transferred away from it. Explain how this affects:
(Marks: 2)
a) Movement of particles: Particles move more slowly due to less kinetic energy.
b) Size of the object: The object may shrink slightly as particles come closer together.
