1. What is meant by development? Explain with an example.
Answer:
Development means improvement in the quality of life of people. Different people
may have different goals of development. For example, a farmer may want better
irrigation facilities and higher income, while a student may want good education and
employment opportunities. Thus, development includes both material and non-
material goals.
2. Why do different people have different developmental goals?
Answer:
Different people have different developmental goals because their life situations,
needs and aspirations are different.
A landless rural labourer may want more days of work and better wages.
A rich farmer may want higher prices for his crops.
A student may want quality education and a secure job.
Therefore, what may be development for one person may not be development for
another.
3. Why is income considered an important criterion for comparing countries?
Answer:
Income is considered important because it helps people meet their basic needs such
as food, clothing, housing, education and healthcare. Countries with higher average
income generally have greater ability to provide better facilities and services.
Therefore, average income (per capita income) is commonly used to compare the
development of countries.
4. What is per capita income? Why is it used to compare countries?

Per capita income is the average income of a person in a country. It is calculated by
dividing the total income of the country by its total population.
It is used to compare countries because countries have different population sizes.
Average income gives a better idea of the income available per person.

development.

National development refers to the overall development of a country and its people.
It includes higher incomes as well as better education, healthcare, equality, security
and public facilities. Since different people may have different goals, national
development should consider the well-being and interests of all sections of society.
