DSDM (Dynamic System Development Model)
• DSDM provides a framework for business solution.
• It is a short duration process (between 3 to 6 months)
• Manages business changes and developing solution for
business when business becomes more difficult due to
people from different disciplines work together.
• DSDM deals with some key business problems such as:
a) Communication problem
b) Late delivery
c) Wrong solution
d) Unused features
e) Changing requirements
f) Delayed return of interest
Principles
a) Focus on business needs
b) Deliver on time
c) Collaborate
d) Never compromise on quality
e) Build incrementally
f) Develop iteratively
g) Communicate Continuously
h) Demonstrate control
a) Focus on business needs
1) Understand the true business priorities
2) Establish a sound business case
3) Seek continuous business sponsorship and
commitment
4) Guarantee to produce the key deliverables
b) Deliver on time
1) Timebox the work
2) Focus on the priorities of the business
3) Always hit deadlines
c) Collaborate
1) Involve the right stakeholders at the right
time, throughout the project
2) Ensure the members of the team are
empowered to take decisions on behalf of
those they represent
3) Actively involve the business representatives
4) Build one team culture
d) Never compromise on quality
1) Determine the required level of quality at the
start
2) Make sure that quality does not become a
variable
3) Design, document and test appropriately
4) Build quality in by constant review
5) Test early and modify continuously
e) Build Incrementally
1) Strive for every delivery of business where
possible.
2) Continually confirm that the correct solution
is being built.
3) Formally re-asses priority and project viability
with each increment delivery.
f) Develop Iteratively
1) Do enough design up front to create a strong
foundation.
2) Take an iterative approach to build all
products
3) Build customer feedback into each iteration
4) Accept that most details emerge later rather
than sooner
5) Embrace change to get right solution
g) Communicate continuously
1) Run daily team stand up session
2) Use facilitated workshop
3) Present the evolving solution early and often
4) Manage stakeholders expectations throughout the
project
5) Encourage informal, face to face communication
h) Demonstrate Control
1) Use an appropriate level of formality for tracking
and reporting progress
2) Make plans and progress visible to everyone

Prioritization
• MoSCoW Rule
1. Must Have
2. Should have
3. Could have
4. Won’t have
• Steps to assign Priorities
1. Find out why requirements are needed for the project or the next release.
2. Start out with all requirements defined as won’t have and get the business
to justify why they are needed
3. Challenge for all Must haves to ensure they are “show stopper”
4. If there is more than one demand implied in any requirement, decompose
it , then check if they are all the same priority.
5. Every requirement should be traceable to a project objective. If the
objective is not a Must have , then the requirement should not be taken.
6. Priorities can change so re-evaluate requirements after each release.
Development Strategy
• Vertical approach: Requirements are delivered sequentially so that something
basic is available early and features are fully completed at the end of each timebox.
• Horizontal approach: Requirements are evolved in parallel. So all the
requirements are addressed early but in a fairly simplistic way. Each subsequent time box
fills them out until they are fully met.
• Combined approach: All the requirements are addressed in a simplistic way.
This gives an early view of the full solution, then each requirement is fully delivered
sequentially.
