Medical students at the early stage of their education meet patients, their relatives, staff, and their peers.
They must have communication skills, professional attitudes, and ethics to deal with their patients and be
trustworthy.

This course aims to provide students with rules and laws governing medical ethics in Sudan and raise the
awareness of students about the international Codes of Medical Ethics. The course also aims to initiate
preparation of the students as future doctors for good communication with patients and their relatives and
health staff.

By the end of this module the student should be able to:
A. Knowledge:
➢ Define professionalism.
➢ List and discuss the bodies that govern medical practice in Sudan and their role.
➢ Define and describe contemporary medical ethics and the main ethical principles of
autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.
➢ Explain the roles of doctors.
➢ Define plagiarism and its importance in research.
➢ Discuss confidentiality and its importance.

➢ Demonstrate the principles of effective communication.
➢ Develop an understanding of continuous self-development.
C. Attitudes:
➢ Demonstrate effective work with members of a team.
Course Content:
➢ Introduction to Professionalism
➢ Introduction to medical ethics and medico-moral problems.
➢ Duties of doctors.
➢ Communication skills with patients and their relatives include history taking, examination and
explanation.
➢ Communication with colleagues, nurses and other staff in health care facilities and effective
teamwork and collaboration with members of health team.
➢ Doctors’ attitudes with patients, colleagues and health providing teamwork.
➢ Contemporary medical ethics and the main ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-
maleficence, and justice.
➢ Doctors’ attitudes in the dissection room.

4. Course policy:
The student will not be allowed to sit for the final examination if he/she is absent for more than 25%
of the course activities and fails to present the debate and role play.
