The mirror is likely to be
(a) plane (b) concave (c) convex (d) either plane or convex
Following questions consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer these questions
selecting the appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

6. Assertion(A): The mirrors used in search lights are concave spherical

Reason (R): In concave spherical mirror the image formed is always virtual.
7. Assertion (A): It is not possible to see a virtual image by eye.
Reason (R): The rays that seem to emanate from a virtual image do not in fact emanate from the
image.
8. Assertion (a): the value of f in a concave mirror is taken as –ve and in a convex mirror is taken as +ve.
Reason(r): all distances measured to the right of the origin are taken as ve and those measured along
the left of the origin are taken as negative.
9. CASE STUDY
A student took three concave mirrors of different focal lengths and performed the experiment to see
the image formation by placing an object at different distances with these mirrors as shown in the
following table
Case Object- Focal
No. distance length
I 45 cm 20 cm
II 30 cm 15 cm
III 20 cm 30 cm

Now answer the following questions:

(a) List two properties of image formed in case I.
(b) In which case in the given table the mirror will form real image of same size and why?
(c) Look at the table and identify the case which resemble the situation in which concave mirror are
used as shaving mirrors? Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation in this case.
OR
(d) Name the type of mirror used by dentists. Give reason why they use such type of mirror
10. What name is given to the linear distance between the pole and principal focus of a spherical
mirror? If this distance is 25 cm, how far is the centre of curvature from the pole of the spherical
mirror?
11. How can you identify the three types of mirrors without touching them?
12. Where should an object be placed in front of a concave mirror of focal length 20 cm to obtain a real
image magnified two times?
13. Identify the nature of the mirror and mention two characteristics of the image formed when
magnification (m) = +6.
14. Name the type of mirror used in a solar furnace. How is a high temperature achieved by this device?
15. An object is placed at a distance of 12 cm in front of a concave mirror. It forms a real image four
times larger than the object. Calculate the distance of the image from the mirror.
16. Identify the device used as a spherical mirror in the following cases, when the image formed is
virtual and erect in each case:
(a) Object is placed between the device and its focus; the image formed is enlarged and behind it.
(b) Object is placed between infinity and the device; the image formed is diminished and lies between
the pole and focus behind it.
17. Under what condition, in an arrangement of two plane mirrors, will the incident ray and reflected
ray always be parallel to each other, whatever the angle of incidence? Show this with the help of a
diagram.
18. State the sign convention of u, v, and f for a concave mirror when the image is real.
19. State the sign convention of u, v, and f for a concave mirror when it forms a virtual image.
20. State the sign conventions for u, v, and f for a convex mirror.
21. An object is placed in front of a convex mirror such that its virtual image is formed behind the
