Part B
Attempt Any (Four) Questions
1. A rectangular beam has the dimension b=10 in, d=23in and h=25in, and is reinforced with three
No.8 bars so that As = 2.35in2. The concrete cylinder strength, fcʹ is 4000 psi, and the tensile
strength in bending (modulus of rupture) is 475 psi. The yield point of the steel, fy is 60000 psi.
Determine the stresses caused by a bending moment, M =90ft-kips. (Ec=3.6×106 psi, Es=29×106
psi) . (20 marks)
2. A rectangular beam has width 12 in and effective depth 17.5in. It is reinforced with four No.9 bars
in one row. If fy=60000 psi and fcʹ=4000 psi, what is the maximum moment that can be utilized in
design, according to ACI Code? (20 marks)
3. A singly reinforced rectangular beam is to be designed with effective depth approximately
1.5 times the width, to carry a service load of 1500 lb/ft in additional to its own weight, on a 24 ft
span. The ACI code load factors are to be applied as usual. With fy =40000 psi and fcʹ=4000 psi,
determine the required concrete dimensions b, d and h, and steel reinforcing bars for ρ=0.4ρb.
(20 marks)
4. A rectangular beam having b =16 in and d = 22 in, h = 25 in spans 20 ft face-to-face of simple
supports. It is reinforced with 9.86in2 of tension steel that continue uninterrupted to the ends of the
span. It is to carry service dead load 1 k/ft in addition to its own weight and service live load
3.48 k/ft both uniformly distributed along the span. If fc′=3000 psi throughout what part of the
beam is web reinforcement required? Design the shear reinforcement, using No.3 vertical
U stirrups with fy= 40000 psi. (20 marks)
5. (a) A beam is to be design for factored load causing a maximum shear of 50 kips, using concrete
with fc′= 4000 psi proceeding on the basis that the concrete dimensions will be determined by
diagonal tension, select the appropriate width and effective depth
1. For a beam in which no web reinforcement is to be used
2. For a beam in which only the minimum web reinforcement is to be used
Page 2 of 3
3. For a beam in which web reinforcement provides shear strength Vs = 2 Vc.
Follow the ACI code requirement, and let d = 2b. Calculation may be based on the more
approximate value. (15 marks)
(b) A rectangular beam is to be designed to carry a shear force, Vu of 30 kips. No web
reinforcement is to be used, and fcʹ is 4000 psi. What is the minimum cross section if controlled by
shear? (5 marks)
