Relational Rift Repair Ritual
A guided practice for couples to transform conflict
into care and connection
First things first
Before you listen to the audio -- remember: Trust Yourself First. If something doesn’t
resonate for you, or you don’t feel it’s right for you -- don’t follow the instructions. What
works for some couples and individuals does not work for others. After all, if it was so
straightforward, we’d all be able to steer conflict towards care and connection with ease.
The main thing to remember is to do whatever it takes to move toward more relaxation
and inner calm within yourself first. Whatever helps get you there is the ‘right’ thing to do --
and if possible, let your partner know what you need to create that inner experience.
The experience of feeling connected in a healthy way to another person comes from first
doing as much as you are able to connect more deeply to the truth within yourself.
You can feel scared, angry, upset, etc. -- and at the same time you can connect to the part
of you that can hold your own feelings without letting them take over your behavior. That’s
the key -- not to deny your truth, but to ensure you are not consumed by the relative and
temporary truth of what you’re feeling and completely forgetting the deeper truth of your
love and care and commitment to your partner.
The Pause within the Pause
Since every couple and individual will have different needs, please pause and rewind the
recording as much as you need to. There’s no rush, and the time you spend getting back to
center will save you hours of conflict and repair process in the future. Remember, it takes
years and decades to build trust, and it can be eroded or weakened in an instant.
Foundational Agreement (set this up together when you’re calm)
Whenever either of us notices tension rising (heartbeat elevated, nervous system
arousal), one of us can say ‘Let’s pause and slow this down’.
Once that happens, we both commit to follow the 10-minute reset process.
Step-by-Step Flow to follow along or do this on your own
1. Pause & Ground
○ One partner calls for a pause — and you both agree to use the next
few minutes to get calm, clear, and connected to yourselves.
2
○ Start a 10-min timer (if not using the recording), place feet on the floor,
soften gaze or close eyes -- use this time for healthy retreat into
Self-energy and a remembrance of who you truly are.
2. Regulate Breath, Body, Nervous System (1-2 minutes)
○ Inhale 4 counts, exhale 6 counts for 5-10 slow cycles. This helps calm
the nervous system.
○ If you prefer, you can also practice ‘resonance breath’, which is even
inhales and exhales, usually 5-6 seconds in, and 5-6 seconds out.
○ On each exhale, drop your shoulders, unclench jaw, feel your body
grounded and supported by whatever you are sitting on.
3. Self-Inquiry (1-2 minutes) – silently, I encourage using a journal to give
yourself more clarity and get the thoughts out of your head
○ “What am I actually feeling beneath the surface layer right now —hurt,
fear, sadness, longing?”
○ “What do I genuinely need right now to feel safe or connected?”
4. Empathy Shift (1-2 minutes) – still silent, use journal
○ “What might my partner be feeling and needing?”
○ “What positive intention could be underneath their words or tone?”
5. Reconnect through Heart-Shares (3 or more minutes)
○ Open eyes, face each other.
○ If one of you is still quite triggered, this is a good time to extend the
pause time and come back to the conversation when you are more
resourced and able to share and listen more gracefully.
○ If you’re feeling available to share and listen, then proceed
○ Compassion for Self: “I’m feeling _________ and I need _______.”
i. Keep it simple, use “I” statements, don’t get into story about
what they did wrong or judgement/critique
ii. Ask your partner to mirror back what they are hearing -- it
doesn’t have to be perfect, you just want to truly feel ‘gotten’.
3
iii. Once that is complete, you can move to the next part:
○ Empathy for the Other: “I imagine you might be feeling ______ and
needing ________—is that true?”
○ Partner confirms or clarifies, then swap roles. Continue the dialogue
with slower pacing and reflective listening
6. If there are simple requests you want to honor right in the moment -- a hug,
holding hands, eye contact, etc. -- please do so! That’s a huge win to
reconnect.
7. You don’t need to have the ‘bigger conversation’ that may be needed right in
that moment (if there’s more to clear/heal/repair) -- but make a plan to
create time for that conversation in the near future.
8. Congrats! By pausing and slowing down, you are not only creating a healthier
and more harmonious relationship, you’re also bringing more peace and love
to the world through your way of being. (And avoiding the hours, days, or
weeks of misery and despair that massive fights can create for one or both of
you.)
Pro Tips for Success
● Practice when stakes are low (mild annoyances) so it’s accessible during
bigger rifts.
● If ten minutes isn’t enough, schedule a longer repair conversation later, but
honor the pause agreement in the moment.
● Celebrate usage: each successful reset is a win—acknowledge it out loud to
reinforce the habit.
