Module 1 - Engine Measurements

The document outlines the first module of a Motor Trade Theory N2 course, focusing on engine measurement techniques including piston, crankshaft, and connecting rod measurements. It emphasizes the importance of using proper tools like micrometers and dial-bore gauges, and the need for cleanliness during measurements to avoid errors. Additionally, it covers how to check for cylinder head warpage due to overheating and the necessary steps to assess and compare measurements against manufacturer specifications.

MOTOR TRADE THEORY N2

MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

Lesson Objectives:

➢ Piston Measurement.
➢Crankshaft Measuring.
➢Con-Rod Measuring.
➢Overheating and Cylinder Head Warp.
MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

Measurement
• Use the micrometer to measure the piston skirt diameter at 90𝑂 to the piston bore.

• The recommended measurement point is the largest diameter as this is the point of critical clearance and
should have the greatest dimension.
• Other measurement like the piston top, bottom ring as well as the pin bore must also be measured using the
outside micrometer.
• A damaged/collapsed piston will indicate a reduced diameter at the lower end of the skirt.

MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

Crankshaft Measurement
➢ For maintenance reasons, It is very important to measure and compare
measured parts with specifications on the manual.
➢ Wear, cracks, scratches and damages to the main and the big end journals
must be inspected.
➢ Damages to these areas requires replacement/reboring.

Before the commencement of the measuring operation :

➢ The journal surface must be cleaned and free of oil/grease.
➢ Wipe the measuring surfaces used to check the internal and the exterior
dimensions of the crankshaft.
➢ Dirt on the measuring surfaces will result into an error reading.
➢ Take measurement in different location and compare readings to the
manufacturer`s repair manual.
MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

Connecting Rod Measurement

➢ The connecting rod is generally measured for alignment and length.
➢ The distance between the small and the large hole is the Length.
➢ The connecting rod is generally placed on a flat surface to measure the length.
➢ The bores/holes and measured with a dial-bore gauge.
➢ Centre to center measurement are taking with a Venier Calliper.
MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

Connecting Rod Measurement

➢ The Rod aligner checks for any bend or twist.
MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

CYLINDER HEAD MEASUREMENT

Warpage and Overheating
The warpage of a cylinder head is normally caused by over-heating of the engine.
MODULE 1 : ENGINE MEASUREMENT

Checking Cylinder Head for Warpage.

A straight Head and a feeler gauge blade must be used.
Steps
➢ Place a straight edge on the top surface of the engine cylinder.
➢ The straight edge must be place diagonally.
➢ A feeler gauge of a known blade thickness in inserted between the feeler
blade and the top of the cylinder.
➢ Test with a feeler blade thickness of approximately 30 mm to 50 mm.
➢ If the cylinder head is warped a thicker feeler blade will have to be
inserted between the straight edge and the cylinder top surface.
➢ Repeat the measuring process until the edge corner is reached.
➢ Compare the reading to the manufacturer`s specification to determine if
the surface need to be machined (grinding) or replaced.
