CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 Introduction
This chapter describes the methodology adopted for the study and covers the research design,
area of the study, population, sample and sampling technique, instrument, validity, reliability,
method of data collection and method of data analysis.
3.2 Research Design
The study adopted a descriptive survey research design (Nworgu, 2015; Creswell & Creswell,
2018).
3.3 Area of the Study
The study was conducted in selected public secondary schools in Sagbama Local Government
Area of Bayelsa State.
3.4 Population of the Study
The population comprised English Language teachers and Senior Secondary School students in
the selected schools.
3.5 Sample and Sampling Technique
A sample of 50 respondents (10 teachers and 40 students) was selected using simple random
sampling.
3.6 Instrument for Data Collection
A researcher-developed questionnaire (PPTOEQ) using a four-point Likert scale was used.
3.7 Validity of the Instrument
Experts validated the instrument before administration.
3.8 Reliability of the Instrument
Pilot testing produced a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.82.
3.9 Method of Data Collection
The researcher personally administered and retrieved the questionnaires.
3.10 Method of Data Analysis
Frequency counts, percentages and mean scores with a criterion mean of 2.50 were used.
